Robert's reply needs additional explanation, I think.
Yamaha's published disks are definitely different from the normal PC format. I am not 100% certain of the technical distinction, but I believe that they are missing a boot sector. That means that you cannot read Yamaha-published disks on a computer unless you have special software for this purpose, such as the Geibler Utility. In no case are these disks readable on a Macintosh.
I don't know whether there is any technical distinction between a disk that is formatted in the Disklavier vs. a pre-formatted PC disk vs. a disk formatted on a Windows computer (or on a Mac using the PC format). Regardless, all of these disks ARE readable by the Disklavier.
A DC6 with a DKC100R control unit is a Mark II series Disklavier. I can only read the double-density (DD) disk format.
Assuming that you format DD disks in your Disklavier, purchase pre-formatted DD disks, or properly format them in a PC, you are fine. You can easily go back and forth between computer and PC. If, however, you incorrectly format a DD disk as an HD disk on a PC or you format an HD disk on the Disklavier (which results in a DD format), then things don't work out right.
The last thing to know is this: although you can transfer files back and forth between computer and Disklavier, the files that you record on the Disklavier will be in E-SEQ format. Since there are few if any E-SEQ playback or editing programs for PC, there is not much that you can do with these files on the PC unless you convert them using the Geibler utilities.
On the other hand, if you record directly into your computer and save the resulting files as Standard MIDI File (SMF) Type 0 or if you acquire SMFs of Type 0 from other sources, you can copy them to a DD disk for playback in your Disklavier--assuming that your Disklavier has the firmware update that provides limited support for SMF Type 0. NOTE: Avoid putting both E-SEQ and SMFs on the same disk with this Disklavier.
IMHO, your life will be much easier if you add a Yamaha DSR1 to your Disklavier, thus providing it with full SMF support, HD support, and an internal tone generator.

I use and recommend the Geibler Utility (www.giebler.com) Yamaha Disk
Manager (which runs under DOS). Other folks use the DKVUtils available
for downloading on this site.
