Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

2004-11-08 by terryl212

I have a DC6 with a DKC100R. The DKC100R diskette format appears to
be different from my PC's diskette format. Does anyone know if it's
possible to transfer files to & from the PC to the DKC100R via
diskette. If not, can it be done some other way (e.g. cable)?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Terry

The Disklavier's diskette format is different from a PC's. To a PC, a
Disklavier-formatted diskette appears to be in need of formatting.
Don't do it of course!

I use and recommend the Geibler Utility (www.giebler.com) Yamaha Disk
Manager (which runs under DOS). Other folks use the DKVUtils available
for downloading on this site.

Re: [disklavier] Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

Good evening, everyone.

Robert's reply needs additional explanation, I think.

Yamaha's published disks are definitely different from the normal PC format. I am not 100% certain of the technical distinction, but I believe that they are missing a boot sector. That means that you cannot read Yamaha-published disks on a computer unless you have special software for this purpose, such as the Geibler Utility. In no case are these disks readable on a Macintosh.

I don't know whether there is any technical distinction between a disk that is formatted in the Disklavier vs. a pre-formatted PC disk vs. a disk formatted on a Windows computer (or on a Mac using the PC format). Regardless, all of these disks ARE readable by the Disklavier.

A DC6 with a DKC100R control unit is a Mark II series Disklavier. I can only read the double-density (DD) disk format.

Assuming that you format DD disks in your Disklavier, purchase pre-formatted DD disks, or properly format them in a PC, you are fine. You can easily go back and forth between computer and PC. If, however, you incorrectly format a DD disk as an HD disk on a PC or you format an HD disk on the Disklavier (which results in a DD format), then things don't work out right.

The last thing to know is this: although you can transfer files back and forth between computer and Disklavier, the files that you record on the Disklavier will be in E-SEQ format. Since there are few if any E-SEQ playback or editing programs for PC, there is not much that you can do with these files on the PC unless you convert them using the Geibler utilities.

On the other hand, if you record directly into your computer and save the resulting files as Standard MIDI File (SMF) Type 0 or if you acquire SMFs of Type 0 from other sources, you can copy them to a DD disk for playback in your Disklavier--assuming that your Disklavier has the firmware update that provides limited support for SMF Type 0. NOTE: Avoid putting both E-SEQ and SMFs on the same disk with this Disklavier.

IMHO, your life will be much easier if you add a Yamaha DSR1 to your Disklavier, thus providing it with full SMF support, HD support, and an internal tone generator.

Regards,
PianoBench

Re: Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

2004-11-09 by terryl212

Thanks for the help from both of you. I was able to download and
play files from this site thanks to your guidance.

One odd item. I could only create usable diskettes from new
preformatted diskettes, i.e. came that way from manufacturer.
Diskettes formatted in the DKC100R were not readable by the PC even
with the EEXPLORE.EXE program provided in the dkvutils.zip file. I
tried reformatting DKC100R formatted diskettes, however Windows XP
Pro only allows me to format 1.44 MB diskettes, even though I
inserted the old DD diskette. The net result is that once I've
formatted the diskette with the Disklavier, it is no longer readable
by the PC.

If anyone knows the number of tracks, sectors and bytes per cluster
I might be able to re-format a 720kb floppy using the old DOS format
command.

Maybe I need an older version of Windows

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Hi

A Disklavier disk is a NORMAL PC disk BUT the boot sector has been
wiped clean. This is a very low tech approch to stop you copying it.

By far the best programs to use are RootARipper or RipARoot depending
if you have win95, 98 and Dos or Win2000 or WinXP. Unlike the
Geibler Utility these programs are FREE. The RootARipper is for
Win2000 and WinXP. Both programs will copy the contents of a floppy
to the HDD from there you can "Back it up" to another floppy or CDrom.

Re: Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

2004-11-09 by midi_magic2000

Hi

I am sorry I don't know your DKV but you can not format a 1.4M floppy
as a 720K and then expect a PC to read it. The other hole tells the
PC that it is 1.4M but if you format it to 720K it will not see it.
You could tape over the hole, but I don't like doing that as the tape
may come off inside the drive.

It is ALWAYS worth keeping an old PC with Win95/98 on it just for
these occasions. I keep an old laptop handy for this.

Re: [disklavier] Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

2004-11-09 by Daniel O'Connor

A discussion for the newbies...

I purchased a used DC3A Wagon model built in 1992 (I think). Great
condition a truly great piano.

I then searched the internet and found a deal on a used DSR1 which I
married to an old stereo receiver and speakers. This brought the world of
midi (XG and normal) as well as HD disks.

I then took an older laptop computer with Cakewalk and the great yamplayer
software (thanks DC) which allows me to play the piano directly from my PC.

I now have thousands of midi files organized on the PC (principally
collected from the web) that I can play without ever touching a disk. (I am
of course backed up on CD) I have also networked the computer so when the
kids say "do you have a song I know", I can immediately find it using a
midi search on the web and download it, may convert slightly in Cakewalk
and then play it in minutes. I also find myself looking on-line for
lyrics on songs and viewing them on the computer as the song plays.

Next I hope to find the perfect Karaoke player that will Include the lyrics
of the songs as well as a midi driver out.

Looking at the new Disklavier, I am not all that jealous. I am very happy
with the upgradability and flexibility and price of the older model.

Ideas are always welcome.

Cheers

Dan O'Connor

Good evening, everyone.

Robert's reply needs additional explanation, I think.

Yamaha's published disks are definitely different from the normal PC
format. I am not 100% certain of the technical distinction, but I believe
that they are missing a boot sector. That means that you cannot read
Yamaha-published disks on a computer unless you have special software for
this purpose, such as the Geibler Utility. In no case are these disks
readable on a Macintosh.

I don't know whether there is any technical distinction between a disk that
is formatted in the Disklavier vs. a pre-formatted PC disk vs. a disk
formatted on a Windows computer (or on a Mac using the PC format).
Regardless, all of these disks ARE readable by the Disklavier.

A DC6 with a DKC100R control unit is a Mark II series Disklavier. I can
only read the double-density (DD) disk format.

Assuming that you format DD disks in your Disklavier, purchase
pre-formatted DD disks, or properly format them in a PC, you are fine. You
can easily go back and forth between computer and PC. If, however, you
incorrectly format a DD disk as an HD disk on a PC or you format an HD disk
on the Disklavier (which results in a DD format), then things don't work
out right.

The last thing to know is this: although you can transfer files back and
forth between computer and Disklavier, the files that you record on the
Disklavier will be in E-SEQ format. Since there are few if any E-SEQ
playback or editing programs for PC, there is not much that you can do with
these files on the PC unless you convert them using the Geibler utilities.

On the other hand, if you record directly into your computer and save the
resulting files as Standard MIDI File (SMF) Type 0 or if you acquire SMFs
of Type 0 from other sources, you can copy them to a DD disk for playback
in your Disklavier--assuming that your Disklavier has the firmware update
that provides limited support for SMF Type 0. NOTE: Avoid putting both
E-SEQ and SMFs on the same disk with this Disklavier.

IMHO, your life will be much easier if you add a Yamaha DSR1 to your
Disklavier, thus providing it with full SMF support, HD support, and an
internal tone generator.

Regards,
PianoBench

 Don't do it of course!

I use and recommend the Geibler Utility (www.giebler.com) Yamaha Disk
Manager (which runs under DOS). Other folks use the DKVUtils available
 for downloading on this site.

Re: Transferring files from PC to DKC110R and back

VanBasco
That is the one I use with my DKV!

Just remember to assign the piano parts to channel 1 (or what ever
you have set up).
You may also need to rename (just that) the KAR files to MID files
and back again if you use cakewalk as the sequencer (editor) for
doing the instruments (voices) assignment.

I also think that the channel - track confusion would arrive in KAR.

In standard KAR files track 2 (not channel 2) is assigned to lyrics.
(VanBasco recognizes them in any track)

If you want to make your own KAR files then try PGMUSIC's Power
Tracks Sequencer, it is not as powerful as Cakewalk, but has nicer
features to add lyrics to MID files an create KAR files.

There were some free KAR editors but not so nice to use for me.
Regards

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
