RE: [disklavier] DGT7 keyboard noise during disklavier playback

2004-12-12 by Todd Muncy

I have the DGT2, which is basically the same unit in a smaller package.
I think the noise you are describing is normal for both digital and
acoustic disklaviers. It isn't noticeable on an acoustic piano because
you can't hear it over the music. If you turn the master amplifier
volume control down to an artificially low level on a digital piano, it
will become noticeable.

I don't normally leave the key movement on, except to impress company or
observe how a piece was played. It doesn't serve any other real purpose
on a digital piano and turning it off will reduce wear and tear.

On acoustic models, you are limited to reducing volume on the
controller, which reduces key velocity (and some of the associated
keyboard noise), but the overall sound is affected and you can't get to
a truly low level. Killing the key movements and having a true volume
control is one of the advantages of a digital unit. One of the leading
complaints you hear from new owners of acoustics is the inability to
reduce the volume enough to enjoy cocktail conversation in the same
room.

Subject: [disklavier] DGT7 keyboard noise during disklavier playback

I have a question about my DGT7 which I understand is
not a widely used model. We really enjoy the
instrument but I have been concerned about the
mechanical noises it makes when the key movement is on
and we are using the Disklavier function. During
softer passage or when the volume is turned down (my
living room is not that large) you can clealy here the
keys being moved. Is this normal? I know I can turn
the key movement off but guests always like to see it
playing. You don't hear these noises when playing the
instrument as a conventional piano. Is there anyway
to decrease the noise level during playback?

I asked a local Yamaha tech but he had never worked on
a DGT7 and wasn't very helpful. Thank you very much
for your assistance!

Bob
