Disklaviers are not installed in U3s anywhere that I know of. Did you inquire about a special order? Sometimes that is possible. The Record system is superb only on a Disklavier. Both PianoDisc and QRS systems admit their record systems are only accessories and not meant to capture a true piano performance. Same goes for Baldwin. I have never really sensed much of a difference between a U1 and a U3, so my suggestion is that you request the dealer to have the U1 properly tuned and voiced and then see if you like it. Installing a PianoDisc (or QRS) system into a U3 involves cutting a slot in the keybed. On some pianos, there is a problem with the keybed sagging later on and messing up the action regulation. The other reason DKVs are probably not installed in taller uprights has to do with physics. The hammers must hit the strings at 1/8 the speaking length of the string. On a U1, the piano action sits directly on top of the keys. If you add 3 inches to string length, then you need to mount the piano action higher using taller capstans. Most taller capstans are wooden dowels and they may not hold up well being played by solenoids. If you do go with a player installed in a U3, you will need to be very careful about the velocity of the MIDI data not damaging wooden dowel capstans. I tuned a German-made upright today that had metal caps covering the wooden capstans, so that may be a work around. You definitely have a quandry. Is there a grand piano you like as well?
