U3 in disklavier?

U3 in disklavier?

2004-12-17 by Keith Barrett

Hi

Still having problems in deciding whether to go with disklavier or
pianodisc so, one final problem.

Today, I played a u1 and a u3. I know I can get a disklavier in u1 or du1
but the u3 had so much more about it. Those extra 10 cm in hight really
seemed to make a difference.

The shop told me that they cannot get a u3 disklavier so, is that just in
the uk or are they not made?

Also, if they are not now in u3, are there any older ones in the u3
format?

I am not sure that I could live with a du1 having played the u3. The
action was so much more responsive and I found that the bass in the U3
was so much better.

So, I am wanting the technology of the disklavier with the u3
performance.

Is it out there?

Disklaviers are not installed in U3s anywhere that I
know of. Did you inquire about a special order?
Sometimes that is possible.

The Record system is superb only on a Disklavier. Both
PianoDisc and QRS systems admit their record systems
are only accessories and not meant to capture a true
piano performance. Same goes for Baldwin.

I have never really sensed much of a difference between
a U1 and a U3, so my suggestion is that you request the
dealer to have the U1 properly tuned and voiced and
then see if you like it. Installing a PianoDisc (or
QRS) system into a U3 involves cutting a slot in the
keybed. On some pianos, there is a problem with the
keybed sagging later on and messing up the action
regulation.

The other reason DKVs are probably not installed in
taller uprights has to do with physics. The hammers
must hit the strings at 1/8 the speaking length of the
string. On a U1, the piano action sits directly on top
of the keys. If you add 3 inches to string length,
then you need to mount the piano action higher using
taller capstans. Most taller capstans are wooden
dowels and they may not hold up well being played by
solenoids. If you do go with a player installed in a
U3, you will need to be very careful about the velocity
of the MIDI data not damaging wooden dowel capstans. I
tuned a German-made upright today that had metal caps
covering the wooden capstans, so that may be a work
around.

You definitely have a quandry. Is there a grand piano
you like as well?

Re: [disklavier] U3 in disklavier?

2004-12-17 by Keith Barrett

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your interesting reply.

I suppose those longer capstons on the u3 are what make the action
feel more responsive, more leverage e.t.c.

The reason I was looking at pianodisc and qrs was because I like my
existing piano an old tall steck. I really like this piano, it is large, almost
as big as some of the steck players.

However, I had considered the recording facility on the others not being
too good and decided to look at disklaver. I think it is the last 2 octaves
in the bass that are lacking in the U1 and also, the dynamic range in that
on the u3 there was a huge range between quiet passages and loud
ones, without having to really whack the piano.

I did try a couple of grands and again, I felt I needed to go to one of the
larger ones before I got the sound I am looking for. Also, they do get
expensive as the size goes up.

This is a real dilemma. The steck was completely rebuilt 5 years ago,
new german hammers restrung, the whole works. Just worried about
the lack of recording and hacking the keybed around, I would not want to
have something that was useless.

If you really like your Steck, then investigate having
a PD or QRS installed. I have installed the QRS
product (plastic rocker fingers) under the keys (used
to be called the Gulbransen Crystal Combo) and it works
just fine. Of course, you may need to edit the data
more than you would a DKV. The PianoDisc uses a mylar
system with little mylar fingers. My own perception is
that mylar fingers don't work as well as the plastic
rocker arms. If all you want to do is record your
piano playing then this is all you need.

If you want to install a solenoid rail for playback,
then I don't think you would have a problem with
cutting a slot in the keybed of a Steck - especially if
it is an old American-buit model. The keybeds that
"sag" are Kawai and others that only have a few metal
supports underneath.

The other tricky thing about installing a player system
on a smaller upright is the pedal solenoids - sometimes
there is not enough room. However, a George Steck
explayer old upright would probably already have the
necessary space.

Hello Keith (and Carol!)

I haven't tried it, but I see that Bob Moog (of Synthesiser fame) has
released a new MIDI sensor for pianos called "PianoBar" :
http://www.moogmusic.com/detail.php?main_product_id=71

This consists of a long bar that rests on the keys, and a sensor that goes
under the pedals, allowing you to record midi from most pianos and
keyboards. Obviously, it won't record hammer velocity like a DKV but the
key velocity like a synthesiser.

Some interesting people are using it apparently (Bruce Hornsby, Stevie
Wonder etc) so it must be quite good, but whether it can compare to a DKV
I don't know.

Perhaps this might help with the recording side?

Regards

James

Hi Carol,

Thanks again for your interesting comments.

I think I am moving towards fitting a player system to the steck. At least
I know I like it and I am happy with the voicing and touch e.t.c.

So, I would like to be able to record and also to download some of the
files from the net.

I do not require other synthasized voices or tone generation.

As you have fitted both systems, could you comment on the goods and
bads of both systems?

Also, does the fitting of the rail under the keys affect the touch or
increase noise?

Can I connect a computer to both systems and play files directly from
the hard drive?

Thanks.
