Hi Ron,
Ill offer a few points and hope to answer your questions.
You listened to a C2 and a GC1 and noticed a difference between the 2 pianos. The C2 is a larger piano and larger pianos generally sound better than smaller pianos.
Lifted from the web:
http://www.acoustic s.org/press/ 134th/galembo. htm
Larger pianos generally have longer bass strings, a larger soundboard and a heavier iron frame. Therefore larger pianos tend to have:
louder tone and wider dynamic range
less inharmonic spectrum of the radiated tone
less "stretched" tuning of the bass section
slower decay of high partials in bass tones
wider spectrum (brighter timbre) of bass tones
more regular spectrum of tones
different character of treble tones
Therefore, it is not surprising that the larger C2 will sound better than the GC1 (assuming of course, all other things being equal). Similar logic dictates the C3 will sound better than both of them.
There are some other differences between the GC1 and C2/C3 lines. The GC1 borrows from the Conservatory line and has duplex scaling, but its middle pedal is bass sustain and not full sostenuto. The majority of pieces dont use the middle pedal, so it might not be a big deal. Keep in mind that the GC1 comes in a playback only model which doesnt have hammer sensors. The DGC1m4 does have hammer sensors.
>>Do the hammer sensors affect playback of pre-recorded software
No. The sensors are for recording and dont affect play-back at all.
Some other things to keep in mind is that the GC1 doesnt have a soft-close fallboard or fallboard locks. These might be important if you have little fingers around the piano.
This topic was brought up on the PianoWorld forum where they discussed the differences between the GC-line and the C-line of Yamaha pianos.

Hope this helps.
Ken

Hi, need a bit more help, please!!! Was set to purchase a GC1M4 (5'3")
as I am not a player, its in my price range and am really buying for
disklavier which I love. After listening to my friend play the same
pieces on both the GC1 and the C2 (5'8") side by side I could hear a
difference, not huge, but noticeably smoother. The larger C2 will fit
in my apartment and is about $10,000 more. Now I understand the
disklavier on the C3 is different from the unit on the GC1 and the C2
in that it has hammer sensors. Can anyone offer some advice? Do the
hammer sensors affect playback of pre-recorded software or just
recording. If only recording then no matter since I can't play anyway!
Buying a car was much easier. Thanks,
Ron
