Re: [disklavier] Announcement

2008-01-17 by Kevin Goroway

I saw this announcement a few days ago, and thought about the PC interface as well. I have a hard time believing that they've just done what Matt did originally, and what I do in DKVBrowser (just hang out on the same wireless interface). Reason being...it's just not easy for people to have their pc switch between wireless networks. If they did do that, most people won't be terribly happy (although DKVBrowser users don't complain too much).

I'm really hoping that what they've done is allow it to be done over the "Disklavier Radio" ethernet port...the one that most people have already attached their PC to for the From/To PC folder and the other internet features.

It effectively ends the need to have DKVBrowser (assuming they do a good job), so I'm a bit sad...but I'm happy they are addressing the users wishes.

It is also very easy to masquerade with a fake IP by using a proxy. An IP-filter probably wouldn't satisfy the legal people. The best system would be to give customers a password upon purchase and each subsequent mail update, and authenticate customers with that.

The article is an interesting find. I am curious what interface they have created for controlling the Disklavier from PC.

I noticed that this update is not yet available on the Yamaha FTP

site. As I understand it, they decided to remove the 2.0 release from

the server because of differences in copyright that would make some of

the Internet Radio stuff in violation of copyright or something like

that if it were played in Europe.

I don't see why they can't just build an IP filtering mechanism into

the software. It is very common to filter IP addresses by continent

these days. At the very least they could put an IP filter on the FTP

site so that those of us who are in the US could still get the

software. I don't like having to wait for my dealership.
