Good afternoon, everyone. The DSR 1 can be used in many contexts. One context makes it effectively an upgrade from an early model Disklavier to the equivalent of a Mark IIXG (at least as far as most user functions are concerned). In addition, you can use it as a standalone tone generator and MIDI playback device that offers a complete GM sound set and a basic XG sound set. Depending upon what you are trying to do, the computer option is certainly viable, and there are all sorts of soft synths that you can play from your computer. Personally, I tend to be very computer oriented. However, if one is not computer comfortable, a DSR1 is a good little box that won't crash on stage.
