Yamaha DSR 1

Yamaha DSR 1

2008-07-28 by pal8808

Does anyone have any experience with the Yamaha DSR 1, positive or
negative? I am thinking of getting one to use as a portable midi
recorder to use on gigs, but it seems a bit pricey. If you know where
I could purchase a used one, that might be a help.
Thanks,
Phil

My thinking is that the DSR1 is made exclusively as a control box for a
Disklavier, and these are not portable! Even though there is a control
board inside the box, I believe the actual processing of the MIDI signals
are done on other boards located elsewhere on the piano.

If you want to record MIDI in a portable environment, why not buy a PC
laptop and a MIDI interface that is USB? The price of the laptop, possible
external drive, interface and software would probably cost a little more
than half of the $1295 price for the DSR1. MIDI data is small so it
wouldn't need much of a computer.

"Now there's an easy way to give your MIDI-equipped Yamaha digital or
digital/acoustic piano recording, playback and other advanced
capabilities. Simply plug in the new DSR1 Digital Sequencer Recorder.
Ideal for MIDIPIANOs, and GrandTouch pianos, or an an upgrade for
earlier-model Disklavier pianos, the DSR1 harnesses the power of
today's Disklavier Mark IIXG technology to expand your piano's
capabilities and extend your musical horizons."

So looks like it just connects via MIDI to whatever device you have -
disklavier, clavinova, Nord Stage, V-Drums etc - and gives a
rudimentary sequencer. A ridiculously expensive way of doing things
though, and with really poor recording /editing facilities.

As you say, a laptop (or some other portable device) would be better,
if less robust. You can get dedicated midi recorders too - and some of
the small 2-track audio recorders also have a midi capability IIRC.

Re: [disklavier] Yamaha DSR 1

2008-07-28 by George F. Litterst

Good afternoon, everyone.

The DSR 1 can be used in many contexts. One context makes it
effectively an upgrade from an early model Disklavier to the
equivalent of a Mark IIXG (at least as far as most user functions are
concerned).

In addition, you can use it as a standalone tone generator and MIDI
playback device that offers a complete GM sound set and a basic XG
sound set.

Depending upon what you are trying to do, the computer option is
certainly viable, and there are all sorts of soft synths that you can
play from your computer.

Personally, I tend to be very computer oriented. However, if one is
not computer comfortable, a DSR1 is a good little box that won't crash
on stage.
