Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-01-24 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

If the problem is limited to PianoSoft Plus files, I suspect that you
have files in which the piano tracks have a message that sets
controller 7 (volume) = 0.

The earliest Disklaviers paid no attention to the MIDI message
controller 7 as far as the piano was concerned. And, those early
Disklaviers did not have a tone generator.

When Yamaha started to develop song files with other MIDI tracks, they
found that if you played the files on an early model Disklavier with a
tone generator attached, all of the MIDI tracks would be sent to the
external tone generator. As a result, you would hear the piano tracks
played twice: once played by the tone generator and once played by the
piano itself.

So, Yamaha put in the controller 7 = 0 message in the piano tracks to
make sure that the piano tracks were muted on the external tone
generator.

Of course, this fix was unnecessary on newer Disklaviers, but they
wanted the same files to be compatible with all Disklaviers.

At this point, in the history of the Disklavier, Yamaha needed to come
up with a way to make PianoSoft Plus files play correctly on all
Disklaviers. So, they added a behind-the-scenes feature to the Mark II
and later: these later instruments do respond to controller 7 data for
the piano but they uniquely interpret controller 7 = 0 as controller 7
= 100.

The end result is that you need to edit these files and set controller
7 = 100 for the piano tracks.
