Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-01-23 by sjhart110110

Wonder if someone could help me? I have converted all of my PianoSoft
Audio files to store on my ipod. Very simple, just read them into
iTunes using a high rate audio format. Each song is around 30M, but
given that you can buy a 120 GIG ipod for $200, I can store a lot of
songs. Makes it much easier than pulling out the CD since I don't have
a Mark IV! I am running the ipod into the audio input on my Mark
IIIa. Works perfectly. With the high rate audio format, no notes are
dropping. Anyway, how can I get midi files to work that I have on
PianoSoft solo type disks? I have found the MIDI2PIANOCD program which
can convert, but I need to read the titles onto my computer. They are
all copy protected and my XP computer can't read them. I've looked at
the UTIL, but can't seem to figure it out. Is this possible? If so,
can someone give me the exact steps to do this? Thanks. SJ

Wanted to add, that I have successfully converted my own midi files
(from my own performances) to audio. Works perfectly. Just need to
get the Pianosoft Midi files. Thanks.

Made some progress. If I use the DKVCOPY, I can make a copy of the
disk which is then viewable. However, these .FIL files (assume they
are ESEQ files?) don't work when I run the ESEQ2MID. I've copied
them from the diskette into a folder on my hard drive. When I try
and convert the files, it states that they are not ESEQ files.
However, if I put the new copy in my piano, it plays fine. So,
probably need a way to convert these files to midi (and then I can
convert to audio). Thanks.

MID2PianoCD supports converting .fil files (ESEQ format) directly to
encoded audio. You shouldn't need to convert them to MIDI format first.

By the way, on the Advanced settings page, make sure you have set the
source velocity profile to "Disklavier" so that the note velocities
are left as-is.

Let me know if you have any trouble...

I think I'm running into the issue of how to exactly copy these
disks. For example, I have both 720 formatted diskettes and the
pianosoft titles that I "downloaded" from their store (2HD). Even
the one I copied is having problems. I used the DKVCOPY utlity to
copy a downloaded 2HD diskette onto another 2HD diskette. However,
most of the files are corrupt and/or won't play, etc. Probably wasn't
designed for this! What is the process to take Pianosoft diskettes
and copy it correctly so it can be read by the MID2PianoCD?
Obviously the program can't read them directly because an original
diskette does not work (can't be viewed). Frustrating, but I
recognize that these technologies are old and based upon the various
disklaviers over the years. Thanks for any help.

Use RootARipper instead of DKVCOPY.
http://www.carolrpt.com/musicsoftware.htm

RootARipper
The nice thing about this copy utility is that it copies files on floppy disks to your hard drive on XP computers. It saves the trouble of duplicating a copy-protected disk first, then moving the files to a hard drive.

If they are ESEQ files they will have a .fil extension.

If not play them with Yampalyer and select convert to midi.

Thanks for your help. With this utility I get the files over to my
hard drive, but when I read them with MIDI2PIANOCD (or using the
ESEQ2MID routine), all that plays (after converting to audio and
moving to my ipod) is the pedals with no piano sound. Like part of
the MIDI channels are missing. I also copied some files that are
stored in my memory on my control box to diskette. These are
pianosoft+ (with instruments) and all I hear are the instruments and
no piano.... Any other thoughts?

Got the pianosoft solo titles to work. Can't figure out the multi
channel eseq files. I'm getting closer to having a poor man's Mark
IV! ;)

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-01-24 by George F. Litterst

Good morning, everyone.

If the problem is limited to PianoSoft Plus files, I suspect that you
have files in which the piano tracks have a message that sets
controller 7 (volume) = 0.

The earliest Disklaviers paid no attention to the MIDI message
controller 7 as far as the piano was concerned. And, those early
Disklaviers did not have a tone generator.

When Yamaha started to develop song files with other MIDI tracks, they
found that if you played the files on an early model Disklavier with a
tone generator attached, all of the MIDI tracks would be sent to the
external tone generator. As a result, you would hear the piano tracks
played twice: once played by the tone generator and once played by the
piano itself.

So, Yamaha put in the controller 7 = 0 message in the piano tracks to
make sure that the piano tracks were muted on the external tone
generator.

Of course, this fix was unnecessary on newer Disklaviers, but they
wanted the same files to be compatible with all Disklaviers.

At this point, in the history of the Disklavier, Yamaha needed to come
up with a way to make PianoSoft Plus files play correctly on all
Disklaviers. So, they added a behind-the-scenes feature to the Mark II
and later: these later instruments do respond to controller 7 data for
the piano but they uniquely interpret controller 7 = 0 as controller 7
= 100.

The end result is that you need to edit these files and set controller
7 = 100 for the piano tracks.

Regards,
PianoBench

Greetings George,

If anyone has a need for this, I'll write a little program to do it on
a batch basis for those who do not have a sequencer program to edit
the files.

Re[4]: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-01-25 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings J,

i posted the program to the following page of my web site. it is close
to the top of the last group of files. it is set to convert any MIDI
volume messages to 100 if found on channels 1-3(0-2). seems to work
but feedback would be helpful.

Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-01-28 by sjhart110110

Thanks. I will try it in the next few days. I think this may help,
because if I start the converted audio past the starting point, it
plays fine. If I start it at the beginning, it doesn't play. SJ

Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-11 by sjhart110110

It works perfect! Thanks so much for your help. I'm getting closer
to the poor man's Mark IV :) ! Seriously, with the power of iTunes
(ability to create playlists, etc.) this is fantastic. I'm so glad
Yamaha included the audio inputs to my Mark III. Heck, the ipod
wasn't even around when they came out with the piano. Somebody
should write a program which reads in all of our Pianosoft disks,
CDs, etc. - converts them, strips out Volume messages, creates audio
files, renames them (I had to read the directory files that are
created), etc. You then could read them into iTunes, hook your ipod
to your Mark III and have a fantastic easy to use system!!!!
Seriously, anyone with a Mark III should invest $200 in an ipod and
have a really easy to use system. You could probably hook a wireless
audio system to your ipod (they sell them) and feed your piano
directly without even having a connection. SJ

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-11 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings sjhart110110,

I agree with a lot of what you say but it seems that few others do. I
play my LX almost exclusively through Itunes. I do not have to worry
about the volume message but there are all sorts of other
manipulations that are necessary. I have written several utilities and
have others from other sources that I use to process files to get them
to work for me. Unfortunately everyone has different needs and it is
unlikely that a program will ever be written that addresses all the
possibilities and is not hopelessly confusing. The more options, the
more difficult to make it simple and intuitive.

Personally, I think it is imperative to have documentation associated
with the file if using Itunes or any player. I want to know what I am
playing. I don't just shuffle play and leave the room. For this
reason, I have written a number of programs to automatically add text
information to MIDI and MP3 files from a master database that I
maintain. When I get new music, I find the information online
(usually) or type it in myself if I can not find it already in
computer readable form. Then I run a program that adds MP3 tags which
display in itunes. I don't know which DKVs might work with MP3 files
and have not written anything to add tags to WAV files so my solutions
are only good for those who can use MP3.

I have obtained the text information for all the Yamaha E-Comp files
and have a set of MP3s with tags and offered them to others but there
was absolutely no response so I assume that others can not use these
or just don't care about this way of playing. If MP3 files do work, it
just don't understand why people would not want these.

Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-12 by sjhart110110

I have found that MP3 files will not work correctly with my DC3A.
The audio portion plays fine, but the part that drives the piano
almost always drops notes and gets messed up. Even at the highest
MP3 quality. I have to use WAV formats (like standard CDs) in order
for things to work correctly. A while back this seemed crazy as
each small Midi file would end up being 30-60 megs of audio.
However, in the world when you can now purchase an ipod 120 GIG for
$200, who cares! These ipods have a much higher capacity drive than
even a Mark IV with room to spare!!

I would be interested in any of your MIDI files that you have added
the tags, etc. to (ecomp, others). I would just need to convert
them to audio and then include them in iTunes. Let me know if you
have them posted in the files section or send them to me at
sjhart110@... Thanks. SJ

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-12 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings sjhart110110,

i am traveling and have intermittent internet access. when i do have
it in one location, it is superb, elsewhere not. even the mp3s set
might be possible to post from the good location. sending a CD might
be necessary. i also seem to have caught something and m y brain is
working at about 10%.

i have all the ecomp MIDI files with text keywords as midi text
events. these show in players like vanbascos and some others. i also
have mps which are tagged with both type 1 and 2 tags. i can
experiment and see if an mp3 to wav convert will retain these tags. it
might not be the case but as far as i have been able to tell (someone
correct me here if necessary) there is no hard and fast specification
for wav file tags and.

it would probably be best to talk over the possibilities on the phone
but right now i can barely stay awake.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-13 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings sjhart110110,

i checked my external hard drive and found that the full set of e-comp
files as MP3 is something like 8 gigs. more than i want to put on my
server especially if there are a lot of downloads. the set of MIDI
files would be much smaller. you can convert the MIDI to WAV with
Mid2PianoCD.after converting to MP3 you can add the tags with a
program that i wrote that uses a text file. i tried converting an MP3
with tags to a WAV with the convert that i use for these sorts of
things and the WAVs do not retain the text tags. i don't use wav
myself and do not want to go to a lot of effort researching the use of
tags in wav files and writing code to do it. as far as i know there
are not really any standards that are accepted by all players so it
would probably be a waste of time.

unless you can play the DKV with an MP3 file or you can find a way to
convert an MP3 to WAV with MP3 tags, these files will not be of much
use. it is probably a hardware limitation that prevents the DKV from
playing MP3 files but it would be interesting to hear what Yamaha has
to say about it.

Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-24 by sjhart110110

I have a couple of files that I'm having problems with. For example,
I ripped a Sue Downs diskette/ESEQ to MIDI. Used the volume program
below (which normally works fine) and then created an audio file to
import into iTunes. However, when I play it, the piano is playing
more than the piano part. All kinds of notes playing (like from drum
parts). Sounds crazy. Any help? This does not happen on all of the
songs, just a couple. I'm willing to e-mail the MIDI file to someone
if you want to take a look. Thanks.

Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-24 by sjhart110110

Well, the more I get into converting these multipart (pianosoft +)
disks, I seem to be having more issues. Mostly multiple notes
playing on the piano post conversion. Wonder if the program below
should not be setting most of the channels to 100?

Greetings sjhart110110,

you are welcome to send me the MIDI files. i can't guarantee that i
can (or have the time to) fix it but will give an opinion. you can
also use the List_midi_events_to_log program on my web site to see
what is actually in the file.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting PianoSoft Midi Files into Audio Format

2009-02-24 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings sjhart110110,

getting multi voice MIDI files to play reasonably on a solo instrument
can be a real challenge and usually requires editing in a sequencer
program. i have written a lot of tools to process files automatically
and some of them can be used creatively to get files to play without
actually editing in a sequencer. listing out all of the events to a
text file is a good start at understanding what is in the file and why
it does what it does. my list_midi_events_to_log program is useful for
this. you can see the tracks used, the channels used, patch
specifications etc etc. you could then use the remap patches and or
the remap channels programs to change the relationship between
channels and their instrument definitions or to remove events on some
channels entirely.
