Often, the CF card interface on the remote fails. You're looking at around UKP300-400 for a new circuit board (not sure about the price in the US). I've also come across cases where someone removed the CF WiFi card on the I/O Centre on the piano and bent some pins when re-inserting it (esp. on older Mark IVs, before they fitted a guide to the main PCB). That could be quite an expensive repair, as replacing the CF card socket is a bit of a specialist job.
Another thing you can try is to eliminate other sources of interference such as wireless routers. I had a case where the PRC couldn't see the piano because the piano was sitting 2 feet away from a powerful wireless router which drowned out the PRC signal.
If you have updated the software, the PRC should still connect to the piano, but you will get an error message. In that case, go through the "Inerface Updater" procedure, then go to the "System" -> "Setup" -> "Recall Demo Album" procedure.
