CBS This Morning

2013-02-28 by gelsycycle

On CBS This Morning today there was a piece about the decline of piano sales and playing in America. They interviewed the chairman of Steinway, who, after a gratuitous swipe at "Asian pianos," said that it would be great if someday you could be at home with a "modern player piano" and see a live concert on TV and experience the artist actually playing your piano via the internet.

I can only agree -- it is a great experience!

Well, It seem to me that now it the right moment for Yamaha to ask CBS a chance to show that the future has been here for some time.

Just my two cents having been a piano owner for over 35 years and a Yamaha Disklavier owner for over 3. Tongue in cheek ;-)

I'm guessing that either one or more of the following are involved in this story:
1.	The reporter did an absolutely lousy job or researching her subject.
2.	The CEO of Steinway is an imbecile for not knowing what his competition has been doing for years now. Not just Yamaha (that "Asian Piano Maker") but Bosendorfer (CEUS models). He needs to be dismissed as soon at the board can arrange time off from golf to meet.
3.	Yamaha is about to purchase Steinway and this is a very cynical tactic to introduce the "New Steinway" models of Internet ready-player pianos
LOL
4.	Yamaha is so complacent in their marketing department that they not only didn't see this coming, but haven't put much effort in their marketing or awareness campaigns to make sure the WORLD knows about the amazing things the Disklavier can do. Acoustic piano entertainment media-center? Mine is.

Get with it Yamaha and go boldly
the piano is not dead! People are ready to purchase in North America if you do a better job of making the value known(including realistic pricing-NOT MSRP).

As for this story, thanks so much for linking us to it. Hope more piano lovers respond.

Enjoy the experience!

At least is was on CBS news. Nobody watches that. It was funny to hear them describing what Yamaha did with Elton just a month ago.

Re: [disklavier] Re: CBS This Morning

Well, in that case, not just Yamaha and Bösendorfer CEUS models, but first and foremost the SE system!

But after watching the podcast, turns out what he said was "imagine, for example, when you have a state-of-the-art player piano system on a piano" ...etc. Nothing about the future; all in present tense.

Question is why did it take 7 years for us finally get a notable performance on the Mk4 that showcased it's capabilities right before they put it out to pasture?

Hi Ed,

Out to pasture? I have a DS6M4PRO that I love. I know the right people at Yamaha to talk to. From my many discussions with engineering and marketing personnel, it is clear that Mark IV development is still taking place today and will continue tomorrow. You and I have the richest piano player system ever developed. Additional functionality is coming.

The future looks very good for us Mark IV owners.

Why did it have to be Elton John? There is no shortage of much more interesting pianists who could have been used.

Alright then. I'll bite. What other pianists would you like to see performing with DisklavierTV powered by RemoteLive technology? We can pass that info back to Yamaha.

Re: CBS This Morning

2013-03-02 by kassey22000

Thanks Peter for the chance to chime in.

If only the rest of that great concert at Disney Hall could have been broadcast via DKTV along with Sir Elton... that would have been amazing!

My 1st vote though is for modern Jazz artists.

My 2nd would be pop and rock groups, maybe Coldplay, Keene, Diana Krall, Steve Wonder, and other piano-rich artists/groups.

I can guess that DRM and Licensing issues are huge for these types of opportunities, but not insurmountable.

Fingers crossed :D

That's great to hear Bill!

I have the latest and greatest of all things tech, but if I had to keep just one thing it would be my piano! And it's about the oldest thing around. What's the motivation for further development when they are discontinuing are babies?

Re: CBS This Morning

Here are two suggestions:

1. Alex Hassan. Have a look at his website (http://www.noveltypiano.com/), but make sure you have AVG or similar protection, because it has apparently just protected me from a threat. Alex is utterly fantastic as a novelty piano player.

2. Jack Gibbons, Concert Pianist and superb Gershwin specialist (http://www.jackgibbons.com/)

I've met Alex many times over the years, both in the UK and Washington DC, where he lives. Jack invited me to perform Russ Conway's "Side Saddle" as an encore at one of his Gershwin concerts in Oxford a few years ago. He now lives in the US, and is resident at a college in, I think, Virginia.

There is no shortage of virtuoso classical pianists, but I would suggest that to hear either of these guys playing syncopated piano on your own Disklavier at home would be quite a thrill.

Best regards,

Mike Thomson

Oh, I totally agree on both counts! Recordings of either of these
pianists would be must-buys.

Personally, I'd prefer to have recordings that I can replay and study
(and maybe import into a sequencer or notation software) as opposed to
one-time-only RemoteLive events. Maybe live concerts could be used to
promote the recordings, though.

I have played piano since I was five years old. When I was shopping for a new piano I tried Steinway and several others. I'm so glad I purchased a disklavier. I still play and have recorded many of my own performances, but the piano plays itself most of the time. Much better investment than a piece of furniture! SJ
