Broken CD player/floppy drive

Broken CD player/floppy drive

2013-04-25 by Dave

I just checked out a DC5A for sale, which had a number of problems.

In addition to not having been tuned in over six years, the Mark III CD player drawer would not open (the yellow light flashes a few times but that's it) and the floppy drive would not pop out the disk.

I know that one option is replacing it with the DKC-850 Control Unit. But that's a bit pricey (is it $1,500?) By the way, if I wanted to go that route, where can I buy one?

But I'm wondering if it's possible to repair or replace the CD player and floppy drive so that they'll open up.

Both the CD drive and the floppy disk drive are replaceable from Yamaha providing the serial number on the piano does not indicate it is a gray market piano. Try using a paper clip in that little tiny hole that you can barely see and see if the door opens!

Re: [disklavier] Broken CD player/floppy drive

If the CD does open by sticking a pin into the eject hole, this would be a stop-gap solution, unless the problem is down to just a jammed CD. Yamaha can supply spare drives (CD & FDD), but check the Disklavier Users Group first to see if there are alternative (Yamaha parts can be quite expensive).

You can also use a DKC850 as an update. It's a pretty straightforward replacement and will give you internet access and iPhone/iPad/iPod compatibility, as well as USB ports, but keep the original unit in case of service/maintenance issues (It wouldn't be worth anything to anyone anyway - unless they needed a replacement for their own unit)
