Is it normal that playback is louder than sound produced during recording?

Re: [disklavier] Is it normal that playback is louder than sound produced during recording?

I believe the default playback velocity on the DKV is 100. If you were to look at the MIDI file in a sequencer program like Logic, the data would be as it was recorded.

If you go through the calibration procedure, the piano should play back according to spec. The calibration should be carried out every time any work has been done on the action or when the piano has been moved and installed in a different location.

As far as MIDI velocities are concerned, any Disklavier will modify the MIDI velocities at the extreme ends, i.e. minimum velocity will be around 30-40 and maximum velocity will be just above 100. (electronic keyboards will play any velocity from 0 to 127)

The E3 series should be quite accurate and is the best player piano on the market as far as playing back at low volume is concerned.

Oh, BTW, you can get devices which allow you to modify the velocity curve for MIDI information (you'd have to run the file from an external source like a laptop or sequencer), but it would have an impact on the dynamics of the performance.

you can also process the files to change the midi velocities. veloset works for single files and is very simple to use. my midimod2 program works on batches and is more flexible but more complicated. if anyone wants to use midimod2, contact me directly since the version on my web site is old and has some bugs. will update it some day.

if anyone wants an inline midi velocity modifier, i have one that i never use and would sell it.

Mine is a new E3 and the dealer did not do anything to it with regard to calibration (other than tuning) before and after delivery. The unit has been in the house for a nearly a month. I wonder if I should run the calibration. In the User Manual, the only thing I could find was "Maintenance Mode" and under "Maintenance" are three options: 1. "Post Delivery Check", 2. "Program Versions", and 3. "Pedal Calibration." Can I get to Self-Calibration from "Post Delivery Check"? What is "Post Delivery Check" anyway? There are no specific instructions on "Self-Calibration" anywhere that I could find in the documents that came with the unit. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.

As your piano should be settled in by now. Follow this procedure:

\u2460 Turning on the power ([ON/OFF] button) while holding down the [RECORD] button and [SELECT] button simultaneously.

2) Use the Up/Down cursor buttons ([s], [t]) to change menu, the left cursor button ([<]) to go to an upper menu, or the [ENTER]
button to go to a lower menu or execute the operation. The right cursor button [>] can also be used to go to a lower menu. To execute
an operation, only the [ENTER] button can be used.
3) During execution of a menu, the screen can be scrolled with the Up/Down cursor buttons ([s], [t]) or with the dial depending on the
menu.
\u203b Up-down arrows will appear in the right side when the scrolling can be executed.
If the [STOP] button is pressed when a menu is being executed, the menu will be aborted and the screen will return to the menu
selection indication.

Go down to option 3, "Piano Calibration"

Thank you Adrian for the instructions. Is the self-calibration feature available on the E3 as well? I was under the impression that the feature is available for the PRO version only? I will try to run through the calibration this weekend. Mine is the basic DGB1KE3.

If I just want to verify if the feature is available without going through the whole thing (saving it for the weekend), after doing step 1 below, do I hit [STOP] to exit?

① Turning on the power ([ON/OFF] button) while holding down the [RECORD] button and [SELECT] button simultaneously.

RE: Is it normal that playback is louder than sound produced during recording?

2013-09-28 by <mqphan@...>

Curiously, Calibration-Full is missing from the service menu on my DGB1KE3 (DKC-800). I entered the service menu by simultaneously pressing [Record], [Select], and [On/Off] buttons, and scrolled down to Option 3 which is Piano Calibration. Under Option 3 are 3-1: Calibration - Std, 3-2: Pedal HP Adjust, 3-4: Key ppp Adjust, 3-5: Calibration - Extra.

Notice that 3-3: Calibration - Full is missing.

I went ahead and run Calibration - Std as it was the only option available. I am curious as to why 3-3 was removed or missing. The numbers jump from 3-2 to 3-4 on the list.

Any confirmation and/or explanation is appreciated. Thank you.

BTW, during the calibration process, I noticed that the dynamic range was very good. The piano could play very softly without missing notes to very loudly. The dynamic range was far wider what I could notice during regular playback of MIDI files, includes songs that I purchased from Yamaha.

Re: [disklavier] Is it normal that playback is louder than sound produced during recording?

Good evening, everyone.

This statement below is not true of the PRO and really hasn't been true of Disklaviers with hammer sensors since the Mark IIXG or Mark III.

What is true is that you have to play whisper quiet and thunderously loud to generate super low velocities and velocities above 110.

Regards,
PianoBench
