Disklavier Power Supply Audible Noise (Squeal)

Disklavier Power Supply Audible Noise (Squeal)

2013-10-26 by Dan Waxer

I have a Grand Disklavier and It works quite well.
I have noticed that the power supply makes a high frequency squeal, quite similar to how an old Television set would make an audible 15 kilohertz noise from the flyback transformer. The sound it makes varies somewhat depending on load. So if there is more load on the power supply it changes in real time as power is drawn.
I have never noticed this before.
Can someone tell me:
(1) Could this be normal and power supplies are squealing and I just never noticed before? I find it quite noticeable in my piano room with hard floors and many reflections.
(2) If it is abnormal, which I think it is, the power supply clearly works normally in every way (except for the squeal) so, what is wrong with it, is this something someone has heard about and perhaps fixed in some way?
Any other information is appreciated.
Dan

If the sound definitely comes from the power supply, I would suspect a failing capacitor. If the piano is a DGT, and it is difficult to locate the exact source of the sound, it may by caused by the hammer sensors - there is an updated circuit board available for this.

My Piano is a DC7 Mark II. I am 100 percent sure the noise is from the power supply, it is a high pitched whine that modulates based on the load on the power supply.
A replacement board for this power supply costs $750 with tax! The power supply has many large electrolytic capacitors as well as a number of ceramic capacitors, and some polypropylene capactors.
Which capacitors would you replace? (Big one's or little one's?)
;
Thanks.

As Disklaviers don't have much of a history of leaking capacitors, it would be difficult to tell what might need to be replaced. With the SPX90 sound processor, you could always predict that if you replace 4 particular capacitors, you'd fix it, but with this one, you really would have to get an engineer to look at it.
