Cello voice for mark 4

Cello voice for mark 4

2014-07-17 by Kevin Weng

Hi there!

I was thinking playing Elgar cello concerto main theme on the disklavier. Just casually to entertain myself.

I found the scores here:

http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=24339

I have two problems:

1. There is no cello voice in the Mark 4!? I see guitar and strings etc, but no cello? No violin?

2 the cello score has the tenor clef mixed with the treble and bass. It is dark hard to read! Does anyone has a score with just treble and bass clef?

Thanks!

Kevin

Good afternoon, everyone.

Kevin, the Mark IV Disklavier has both a General MIDI (GM) and XG sound set. XG is Yamaha’s superset of GM. The Mark IV (unlike all other Disklaviers) also has a set of “Performance” voices that are intended not for recording but for layering on top of your live playing. The performance voices do not include cello.

If you set up your Mark IV to record an “Ensemble” track in a new MIDI file and set the voice to #196, you’ll have a cello voice. If you use a computer to set up your MIDI recording, enter GM patch #43.

Cello parts frequently use the tenor clef. If you use a music notation program, you could enter the notes by copying them visually into the notation program and then use the clef feature of the notation program to change clefs.

Thank you George.

Does this mean I have to enter the record mode in order to use the cello voice? That will quite inconvenient as I have enter the mode every time practice, right?

Good morning, everyone.

Kevin, on a Mark IIXG, Mark III, E3, or DKC-850, you can press a Voice button and access any of the available XG voices, including the cello.

The Mark IV was designed differently and comes with a small set of sounds that were created as practical sounds that a keyboardist might want to play. That is the group of sounds that you get when you press the Voice button on the Mark IV.

If you want to play a quality cello from the keyboard of your Mark IV, your best bet might be to get a set of sounds for the computer that includes a nice cello, like Garritan Personal Orchestra. If you have the Finale notation program, it actually comes with a light version of GPO that includes the cello. You would find that the GPO cello sounds quite a bit better than the XG cello.
