Is there a utility that enables Pianosoft Plus (2HD) floppies to run a PC sound card? Thanks in advance. Best regards......David Grubb

Just playing around, I have converted a few Pianosoft Plus files to MIDI and they sound great through a PC. Note that you have to reboot to DOS (not exit to command prompt) in order to use the DISKCOPY utility. IF you are equipped with Windows XP, you cannot use DISKCOPY unless you yourself have set up a dualboot DOS-WinXP system. In that case, go find a PC equipped with Windows 2000 or earlier Windows OS. I suppose it would even work on the original IBM PC with DOS. After you get a floppy copy, you can do the rest on your WinXP system. Mike McGregor

David,
Assuming you are familiar with the dkvutils software available at
this site, I would think that the easiest way to allow play on a PC
is to convert the Pianosoft Plus ESEQ files to MIDI format: first
use the DISKCOPY utility to get a readable set of files on the
floppy copy of the Pianosoft Plus disk, then exit to Windows,
transfer the copied disk's files to PC hard drive and run them
through the ESEQ2MID utility. Just playing around, I have converted
a few Pianosoft Plus files to MIDI and they sound great through a PC.
Note that you have to reboot to DOS (not exit to command prompt) in
order to use the DISKCOPY utility. IF you are equipped with Windows
XP, you cannot use DISKCOPY unless you yourself have set up a
dualboot DOS-WinXP system. In that case, go find a PC equipped with
Windows 2000 or earlier Windows OS. I suppose it would even work on
the original IBM PC with DOS. After you get a floppy copy, you can
do the rest on your WinXP system.

Todd & Mike, Yes, it is indeed the 1.44 2HD diskettes that I was asking about. This diskette is the sampler that came with my Disklavier and has both piano solo (Pianosoft) and Piano with accompanyment (Pianosoft Plus). I was under the impression that all Pianosoft Plus diskettes were 2HD as I have yet to purchase any. Thank you both for the quick responses. This user group is excellent and necessary for all owners of these wonderfully complex Disklavier machines. Best regards....David Grubb --- In disklavier@y..., "Todd Muncy" <disklavier@m...> wrote: > David > > Mike has given you exactly the advice I was about to give you. There is one thing I noticed that does trouble me. You said (2HD), by which I think you are saying it is a 1.44MB diskette and not the usual 720K. If so, that will be a challenge. DKVCOPY is specifically designed to make DOS readable copies of 720K disks and does not support 1.44MB. Unfortunately I don't have a solution if that is the case. The only 1.44 Pianosoft disk I remember was the demos that came with my disklavier. Most or all of the ones they sell are 720K to assure backward compatibility. Hope this helps. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: mcgregor2play > To: disklavier@y... > Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 1:43 AM > Subject: [disklavier] Re: Pianosoft Plus 2HD Utility > > > --- In disklavier@y..., "crayton1999" <david.grubb@m...> wrote: > > Is there a utility that enables Pianosoft Plus (2HD) floppies to > run > > a PC sound card? I have had exactly the same experience with my sample disk which is a 1.44MB diskette. I have only been able to make a duplicate of the sample disk - never have been able to copy it in a way that allows me to access the individual files. At least I do have a backup copy now. For that copy task I used ANADISK, a DOS-based copying utility. It is either freeware or shareware. If you don't have this or a similar utility, I can send you a copy. The same caveats apply as with DISKCOPY. You must reboot to DOS before it will work - not just exit to the command line from Windows. If this disk is the same as most Yamaha's disk then it is missing the "Boot" sector. Which is why your PC cannot read it. As you now have a copy you could try any program like Norton Utils to repair the boot sector or it is posible to write the missing data back yourself. But ONLY do this on the copy.
