MIDI pedal data

MIDI pedal data

2017-11-26 by Skanter123

I've been downloading piano works from Yamaha MIDI DEN (Signature Collection) to Sweet MIDI app on iPad - works great - but my MPX II is not recognizing pedal info. I have MIDI in on DKV set to HP. Is there any other setting on DKV or app that will include pedal data from Yamaha DEN MIDI files?

Thanks in advance...

Good afternoons everyone.

Sam, the XP and SMF MIDI files are set up with note and incremental pedal data on MIDI channel 1.

Regards,
PianoBench

George, thanks for the reply. I don't know why I thought the DKV should be set for HP instead of ch 1. Now I can stream MIDI files from Yamaha DEN Signature MIDI or any web site with piano MIDI files from my iPad using Sweet MIDI Player - sweet!

Good morning, everyone.

Sam, in hindsight, it seems to me that the Mark II was a transition instrument in the sense that it came out as file standards were changing from E-SEQ to SMF. The Mark II, in its day, became upgradable to the Mark IIXG which had support for SMF.

With E-SEQ files, the tradition was to put notes and on/off pedals on channel 1 (or on channels 1+2 if the left- and right-hand parts were split). In this setup, the incremental pedal data was assigned to channel 3, hence HP mode.

My guess is that the idea of putting the incremental pedal data on a separate channel had something to do with the fact that a few early models of uprights did not support incremental pedal: MX100A&B, MX70/80 series, MX22, MX116, and MX500.

Yes, George, I think that many of the MIDI files I tried to play had pedal data on ch 3, hence requiring HP mode. I remember using a program of Spencer's to move data from ch3 to ch1, and vice versa.

I still have some MIDI files in which the pedal data does not work. I have some wonderful files from PG Music's Pianist series, but sustain pedal is not working. I will have to investigate in a MIDI editor to see where pedal data is.

Thanks for your help...

my midimod2 program will move pedal data to channel 1 if that option is selected. i also have a program that lists midi events to a text log file so you can see things such as what channel the notes and pedal data are on. both can be found on this page of my web site. i have many other utilities to do just about anything you can think of to MIDI files but most are not on the download page. ask me if there is some strange thing you want to do. i often surprise myself at how many weird things i have written utilities for.

i looked at my midimod2 program and now see that it does not have an option to move pedal events to ch1 from ch3 it moves them to ch3 if not on ch3 and if that option is selected. so if your device needs the pedal events on ch1 you would have to use my remap channels program to move ch3 events to ch1.
