seeing FromToPC folder on Windows 10

2018-03-05 by Lloyd Randolph

Using DKVBrowser, until recently, I could transfer files over my home network to my Disklavier Mark IV's FromToPC folders. I also could log onto the open WiFi network created by the Disklavier. Both capabilities have stopped working. My goal is to resume transferring midi files from my PC (running Windows 10) to the hard drive of the Disklavier.

I suspect a Windows security update may have caused these capabilities to stop working. I think so in part because when I tried to use Windows to map the Disklavier's FromToPC folder as a network drive, Windows provided the helpful but ominous Error Code 2001 and associated explanation: "You can't connect to the file share because it's not secure. This share requires the obsolete SMB1 protocol, which is unsafe and could expose your system to attack. Your system requires SMB2 or higher."

I know the Disklavier's IP address and can still use DKVBrowser to control my Disklavier. But I can't load files to it over my network.

Have any of you experienced this problem? Do any of you one know how to fix it?

Is there an update to the WiFi network generated by the Disklavier that would allow me to make the network secure? Or can I somehow reach the FromToPC files on the Disklavier in some other way over my network? I have the Disklavier plugged into my router, and so I don't think I'd have to use WiFi to reach the files. Am I wrong to think of midi files in the FromToPC folders as essentially network-attached storage files?

Many thanks,

Lloyd Randolph

i have no idea if this has anything to do with your problems but it is amazing how many things things the latest windows 10 update screwed up on my computer. a lot has to do with security settings that have been set to absurd default values. i have spent hours trying to get things to work again that were just fine before this major update which as far as i can tell has done nothing useful.

Have no idea if this will help but found it on a MS site:

If you want to enable insecure guest access, you can configure the following Group Policy settings:

Computer configuration\administrative templates\network\Lanman Workstation
"Enable insecure guest logons"

Note By enabling insecure guest logons, this setting reduces the security of Windows clients.

SMB1 is uninstalled by default in latest Windows 10 and Windows Server configurations. For more information see <https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4034314/smbv1-is-not-installed-by-default-in-windows-10-rs3-and-windows-server> SMBv1 is not installed by default in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and Windows Server, version 1709.

Thanks for the information, this will put me "on guard" in case of any awkward behavior.
