Questions on piano & Disklavier control unit DKC-850

Questions on piano & Disklavier control unit DKC-850

2018-01-20 by Barbara Graff

Hello group,
I bought a Yamaha baby grand (one size up from smallest) in 2008. I upgraded to a DKC-850 control unit a few years ago.
1). Can I use my Yamaha as a "silent piano?" so that I can listen (through headphones) and not disturb others in my household? We couldn't find a headphone jack on the piano...if needed I can send a photo of my piano
2). I have a midi-interface that I'd like to hook up to a computer and use Logix. I read my new manual and there are many sounds I appear to be able to key in (and I assume, record) to bring in other instruments besides piano. Does that mean my piano keyboard is basically a midi controller? Can my keyboard also be used to key in sounds pre-loaded from Pro-tools or Logix?
3). If I play the piano and record it on the Disklavier, then transfer the file for editing and quanitzing through my midi interface, does that mean I then have a "recorded" file in my Logix or whatever computer software I use? (In the past I transferred piano tracks through a flash drive/USB connection and then edited them on the computer, then put the flash drive back in to "playback" my edited recording and used a mic held above the piano to record the player piano as if it were live...and am wondering if that's not necessary!)
4). My new iphone has "garage band" already loaded on to it...is my DKC-850 compatible with the Apple iphone? Could I plug my iPhone USB jack into the USB jack on my Dislavier and use Garage Band? In fact....are there any headphones that have USB jacks I could plug in to the piano and make it a "silent" piano also?
Thanks- if you could do me a favor- if you respond, put your answers to each question you know the answer to, underneath each question. That way we'll be less confused....or at least I won't get confused...
Thanks to all for any help you can provide!

Group, regarding my questions on the DKC-850: when I asked if my piano keys can be used as a midi controller and I said I read my new manual and it showed I could bring in hundreds of other instrument sounds, I meant my DKC-850 manual....does everyone know you can bring in all these sounds using your Dislavier?
thanks!

On mine, you press voice on the remote, and then "up"
On mine, the silent button and the headphone jack are under the keyboard on the left side, you press the square button in and it's "silent mode" some don't have "silent mode" however.
You can do everything MIDI that you described. I record, play back, download, Protools, iPhone, etc. One thing with MIDI to note is that there is a 1/2 second delay from when it plays, so if you have tracks of audio and MIDI, the MIDI info needs to start 1/2 second sooner than the audio. It's because the piano has to "cache / store" the info or something it just takes 1/2 second for it to play. You can turn that off, but then it will "miss" notes.

Thanks Laurence! I checked the piano per your instructions and I don't appear to have the silent mode.
I'll advise if I have more questions regarding the MIDI tasks ie. download Protools iPhone etc....will investigate...

Laurence, and group, do I need to have a headphone jack to hear the other instruments that are loaded into the Dislavier? Otherwise won't I just hear myself playing the piano keys?
If that's the case, I would think I'd still be able to use the piano keyboard as a midi controller when I use the midi interface to connect to Logix or Pro-tools with my laptop...

Laurence, You may not need a 'Silent Mode" button - on my Disklavier it automatically switches to 'Silent' as soon as you insert the headphone plug into the socket on the piano.

And I never have to re-adjust anything to ensure correct playback of synthesised audio midi instruments, as my controller does it automatically.

I have a Yamaha 709 clavinova
I used to have a piano and disklaver combo but traded it in for the 709
I have floppy disks that I used on the disklaver
Can I plug in a flppy disk drive into the 709 and have it play the Yamaha floppy disks or any midi files?

My MPX100 II goes int silent mode by pressing down middle pedal and moving to the left, where it locks. This puts a wooden bar in front of the hammers, turns the DKV into a MIDI controller and silent piano. I then use external virtual piano (far better than digital piano samples in the DKV) for sound. Synthogy Ivory has a nice one for iPad that can be played wirelessly using Yamaha MD-BT01 Bluetooth/MIDI dongle, or an even better one on a Mac or PC.

Thanks. It appears that the DKC-850 doesn't have the Piano Soft songs loaded into the memory. I still have the paino soft disks.
For the ensemble "sounds" (guitar, bass, bells, Glockenspiel etc.) there are directions in the Disklavier DKC-850 to play them along with the piano, but it appear as if you can't record with the non-piano sounds, is that correct? There are no directions to use the ensemble sounds for recording.
Also, I don't think I can make my piano silent, I will try the "pedal" idea but I think my model doesn't have silent capability, so I would assume if I can't turn off the sound of the piano playing, I probably can't use my piano keys as a midi controller because I won't be able to only hear other sounds I may want to play, even if I can find an adapter that allows me to hook up headphones to the amplifier.

You cannot make your piano a silent model. Not only does a rail prevent the piano hammers from hitting the strings, but the double tails on the jacks automatically adjust the let-off so Touch feels the same on your Fingers.

You will need a USB Floppy Disk Drive to load your floppy disks into memory on the DKC-850. You can also convert (backup) those floppies to standard MIDI files using Mark Fontana‘s PPFBU program to convert the ESEQ files to standard MIDI files and put them on a thumb drive.

You hear the voices when you play the piano keys by selecting keyboard out.

I wrote a manual called The Handbook of MIDI Player tools In 2 versions that explains everything I knew at the time at www.midiplayertools.com

Carol

Why is it better to convert Eseq files to Midi.
?

With the DKC-850 can’t it just play the Eseq files?

Thanks

A good reason to convert ESEQ file to MIDI files is that the result will be more universally usable. MIDI files can be used on any device that plays MIDI files and ESEQ files only work on some Yamaha devices.

There are no directions to use the ensemble sounds for recording.

Disklavier Recording Setup

2018-02-21 by Patricia Spedden

Hello,
My name is Patricia Spedden, I havea Yamaha Disklavier DC6A, and you helped me with some issues when I purchased myDisklavier. I'm now working on my 5th CD, am now practicing inpreparation for recording, and I hoped I could ask you a couple questionsagain.
1. In the advanced manualunder "Recording Songs to a Computer Sequencer," the instructionsshould lead to this display:
>Midi Out = KBD Out

  To Host = KBD Out.

However, when I get to that point, the 2nd line (To Host = KBD Out) is missing. Only Midi Out =KBD Out appears. How can I get to that 2nd line? Do I even need to get to the second line? Is it missing because of my present setup?

2. How do I decide whichchannel option to use for transmitting keyboard and continuous pedal data(including half pedaling)-- 1-16 or HP? I think I've just used Ch 1 for everything--midi & pedal data. I need to be sure to capture half pedaling, which I use a lot.

Sincerely,

Patricia Spedden

If you are using MIDI cables, you do not need anything from the To Host port.

As for recording the pedal, I believe you do not need a different channel, but I am not certain. You could call the Yamaha tech support and ask them. When I use Logic to edit MIDI files, I also see the pedaling on Channel 1.

I am presently in Germany so I do not have access to my technology cal manuals. I wish you well on your recording session!

RE: [disklavier] Disklavier Recording Setup

2018-02-27 by Ron Natalie

While I suppose it can be changed, by default the pedals on the Disklavier are transmitted and received on the same channel as the piano point (typically #1).

I’m in the middle of writing a jukebox system (similar to VanBosco with some mods) for MacOS so I’ve been all over sending and receiving things from the DKV.

Note that when trying to capture stuff from the DKV, you need to select whether you want the keyboard or the Ensemble (i.e., what the thing is playing) on the output.
