Basic question (I imagine) - external midi connection for sounds

2019-08-03 by Dan Binstock

Hi all,

I would like to apologize in advance if this question/topic has been asked and answered - I’m new to this group and haven’t figured out how to find my answer. In short, I have a Mark 3 (floppy drive) and my control unit is a DKC55RCD. I am curious as to the best way to hook up an external source of midi sounds (whether an iPad or Windows laptop) so I can have a better library of sounds. What would you all recommend as the best way to do this (I’m assuming I’d need a Midi to lightening cable adaptor, but I also can’t find a 2 out to 1 in). I figured many of you have done this successfully, and I don’t know if the salespeople at our local Guitar Center will know, so thought I’d ask you all. Thank you so much in advance.

RE: [disklavier] Basic question (I imagine) - external midi connection for sounds

Hi Dan

I connect both a Windows laptop and an iPad Pro to my DC3 MkIV. For Windows I use a laptop running VanBasco Karaoke Player (free) and connect with a USB cable to the USB socket of the piano. (I actually do this wirelessly with a wireless interface in place of a physical connection to the laptop – I can give more info on this if anyone wants it. There are a few foibles with this wireless connection.)

For the iPad, I run Sweet Midi Player (not free) connected wirelessly with a Yamaha MD-BT01 bluetooth midi adapter. The device plugs into the MIDI in and out port on the DKV and, I have to say, works flawlessly. You need a late model iPad for this with Bluetooth v. 4 LE.

As a computer interface, I prefer VanBasco to Sweet MIDI (probably because I prefer Windows to IOS).

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Geoff Ward
