Bluetooth Device for Mark IV Disklavier and Good Editing / Midi Player for Mac

Hello

I noticed a few posts on Facebook Disklavier forum concerning Pianostream app. I still use the Disklavier Controller on my latest iPhone XR and iPad to run most of my midis conveniently from my midi libraray on the piano.

However, I have been thinking that I would like to be able to run some of the midis I have found on the internet and stored on my Mac laptop. I see that there is a midi bluetooth device for the Pianostream app that is recommended for the Disklavier Mark IV. I am wondering if this works with any other midi software on the Mac to play songs from my laptop to the piano directly via the bluetooth connection.

Has anyone tried this sort of connection using bluetooth ?

Good evening, everyone.

Joan, Yamaha makes a Bluetooth MIDI adapter that should work with any Disklavier: MD-BT01. You can find it on the internet for $50.

Quite a number of iPhone and iPad MIDI apps have a feature for connecting to Bluetooth MIDI devices. The connection is established with a MIDI app, not at the System level. Any time the pairing is broken by powering off one end of the connection or the other, the connection must be re-established; it is not memorized in the manner of a BT connection to a speaker.

On the Mac, use the Audio MIDI Setup app to establish the BT MIDI connection. Audio MIDI Setup is found in Application : Utilities. It’s a bit of a nuisance to set up. Once established, any MIDI app should recognize it. Similar to the iOS BT MIDI connection, the connection is not memorized and reestablished automatically.

I am not sure what the state of BT MIDI is on Windows.

Great suggestion. I've been using the MB-BT01 for 3 months now on both the DKC-850 upgrade and on the new Enspire and have to say it's been working beautifully. One suggestion that works great for me is the iOS app - midmittr - I believe it's still free and works great to initially connect my iPhone or iPad to the BT device or re-establish a lost connection.

Also for those who want less cables, the Logitech Bluetooth Audio Adapter for Bluetooth Streaming works great to stream audio from any device with audio out to the piano audio in. It's stable, always re-establishes a connection to my iPad and not very expensive. For example when watching Disklavier TV, it allows me to send the audio and data from my iPad to the Disklavier without clumsy/unsightly cables.

I have one of these - MD-BT01.  Just a couple of points for the unwary:

The sending device needs to have Bluetooth v.4 LE or later (LE is for Low Energy).  Older iPads and iPhones might not have this.

 

Further, the Yamaha Bluetooth MIDI adapter MD-BT01 requires power from one of the MIDI sockets on the Disklavier (MIDI OUT I think).  Do early Disklaviers have powered MIDI sockets?  My Mark IV does.

Good points, Geoff! I have an iPad 2 that does not support BT MIDI, for example.

As for the Disklavier side of the BT MIDI connection is concerned, I can report that I have successfully used the MD-BT01 with the DSR1 control unit which, in turn, was connected to the original MX100A Disklavier upright. I have also used the MD-BT01 with the more modern DKC-850.

Without testing every Disklavier control box ever made, I cannot promise that every model provides the necessary power for the MD-BT01, but I think that all likely do so. In fact, I have yet to hear of one that does not.

I have used the Yamaha wireless Bluetooth interface, BT01, extensively with all kinds of Midi Players in conjunction with the app, Sweet Midi Player.  At home I control my Disklavier from my iMac or my iPhone.  It just seems to work with everything!

Thanks Carol. I will put the bluetooth device on my gadgets to purchase and explore this for playing midis from both laptop and iphone/ipad midi apps.

Hi all, I have a Mark 3 and the Bluetooth midi connector. I can play midi from my phone using the sweetmidi app, but was wondering about something else: if I’d like to expand my library of sounds (eg, use the guitar sound on GarageBand that’s on my iPad to play on my disklavier) does anyone know how to do that? I know that GarageBand has a midi out setting but I can’t figure out how to get the voices from GarageBand to play through to my piano. Any ideas?

Dan,

Like you, I never had any success trying to get Garage Band playing the piano directly, despite altering Audio-Out in the Preferences for GB & the Sound panel of my computer preferences. 
At first glance GB does not normally support export of midi, but I did find a work-around for you to save and export any midis created in GB:
After creating the midi you want in GB, you can  Export it using  and play it thru your usual player.

Dan,

I just discovered and installed MidiO http://mac.dailydownloaded.com/en/mp3-audio-software/audio-production-recording-software/4955-midio-download-install Just be careful as to which green button you press to download, as the bigger buttons tend to be for other apps who advertise an the page

It is an Audio Unit plugin that generates MIDI Out for GarageBand software instrument tracks. It can be used to directly drive either external MIDI devices or standalone software synths. The plugin can NOT directly export MIDI tracks to disk.

Open the 'read me' and follow the simple instructions.

I got it playing the piano briefly (and loudly) from Garage Band but it has now stopped doing so – and I have yet to track down why.

I HAVE previously used Garage Band to synchronise a Movie file on my large screen computer, with an audio track (.wav generated from midi) which played 'live' my old PianoDisc grand thru the rear of the CD unit. But because we, in Australia, are NOT permitted to have the Yamaha Subscriptions for Video & Radio, I am trying now to match my midis of the e-competition with the videos of the same performances to achieve some recordings which combine Video & audio playing the Disklavier – just you get via your Subscription in the States

Any time the pairing is broken by powering off one end of the connection or the other, the connection must be re-established; it is not memorized in the manner of a BT connection to a speaker.

On the Mac, use the Audio MIDI Setup app to establish the BT MIDI connection. Audio MIDI Setup is found in Application : Utilities. It’s a bit of a nuisance to set up. Once established, any MIDI app should recognize it. Similar to the iOS BT MIDI connection, the connection is not memorized and reestablished automatically.

I am not sure what the state of BT MIDI is on Windows.

I noticed a few posts on Facebook Disklavier forum concerning Pianostream app.. I still use the Disklavier Controller on my latest iPhone XR and iPad to run most of my midis conveniently from my midi libraray on the piano.

However, I have been thinking that I would like to be able to run some of the midis I have found on the internet and stored on my Mac laptop.. I see that there is a midi bluetooth device for the Pianostream app that is recommended for the Disklavier Mark IV. I am wondering if this works with any other midi software on the Mac to play songs from my laptop to the piano directly via the bluetooth connection.

Has anyone tried this sort of connection using bluetooth ?
