internet for the enspire

2019-08-19 by Michael Jurewicz

Hi all,
I am a piano tech with a moderate amount of experience troubleshooting and repairing disklaviers. Having said that, I am very far from a networking person. I have found that customers with the Enspire have a hell of a time getting their piano to connect to the internet. The thumb drive/WPS wireless connector (I can’t remember the name of the thing) seems to barely work and I have been told that many wireless routers don’t have a WPS button any longer. Does anyone know if Yamaha is trying to take on this problem?
What wireless device do you find is the most simple, affective way to get people’s Enspires on the internet? Thank you ahead of time for the advice,
Michael

Hi, The new Enspire pianos come with a USB/Wifi device (UD-WL1) for wireless internet/PC access. In working with the good folks in support this can be problematic compared to directly wiring the Enspire to a switch or better yet directly to a home router (which is what I do and it works flawlessly).

With my new Enspire the UD-WL1 often dropped out and this may have been due to how much electromagnetic energy that is produced around the drive and component boxes stored under the piano. There's even warning in the Enspire documentation which points out that the Disklavier components can interfere with other electronics, depending on proximity. So a direct Ethernet cable to a WiFi extender, router, hub, or switch placed some distance from the piano will probably nib this in the bud.

i really do not understand people tolerating messed up music for the sake of wireless "convenience". i am more than willing to stick with wires to insure the music is as good as it can be.
