IMPORTANT, VIRUS SENT TO GROUP IN ATTACHMENT FROM BJBARBER

IMPORTANT, VIRUS SENT TO GROUP IN ATTACHMENT FROM BJBARBER

2002-04-15 by Todd Muncy

Do not open the file internet.bat that was sent to the group by bjbarber
about 10 hours ago. It contains a nasty virus that will cause you many
headaches. I will disable his posting rights until he advises me, by
private email, that he has fixed the problem.

For what it's worth, the virus that got you is a common one called
W32.Magistr.39921@mm. A complete description and removal instructions
are located here:

http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.39921@.... You
need to get rid of it right away. It's a real nasty little bastard that
can do a lot of damage to your PC. I'm sending a CC of this note to the
group, just in case someone was unlucky enough to open it. Let me know
when you're sure your machine is clean and I will re-enable your ability
to most to the group directly.

My apologies for this problem! I do not know where or how this came
about. I use virus detect software. What's more,I did not send
anything to the disklavier group on Sunday. The text of the message
sent is familiar to me, it is in a word document I downloaded from a
pond maintenance group about a year ago. The file "internet.bat" is
nowhere to be found on my harddrive. I have deleted the document, I
will download the latest pattern file for the virus software and scan my
drives. Again my apologies for the problems that have arisen.

Your PC has sent a nasty, well-known, virus to the disklavier group. I
have temporarily disabled your ability to post directly to the group,
until you advise me by private email that you have corrected the problem
and that it is safe to accept emails from you again. Sorry for the
problems you're having.

I'm sure we all sympathize. They come in all the time . . . often with
message that doesn't quite make sense, and an executable attachment. If
you see an attachment of type *.exe, *.bat, *.com, *.scr, you don't need
a virus detector to tell you to avoid it like the plague. (You'll find
a whole list of suspicious file extensions at
http://antivirus.about.com/library/blext.htm) And make sure your system
is set up to display the extension so that you don't get fooled by
"foobar.jpg.exe" with the ".exe" invisible.

2002-04-16 by Todd Muncy

Sorry I wasn't in time to save you Rick. I posted the minute I looked at my email and saw the message from Norton. I'm sure you already have correct the problem, but here is the Norton link on what it is, what it does and how to fix it: http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.39921@... My recommendation is that everyone use Norton AntiVirus. There are other good antivirus programs available but I am most familiar with Norton, who is the market leader. I don't necessarily recommend their bloated, oversized System Works package that eats up memory and slows you down, but the basic antivirus package is excellent. I have mine set to do an unattended update of virus definitions daily. An unattended scan of all my hard drives is done once a week at 2AM. It is also configured to scan all incoming and outgoing emails as they are sent or received. When I got on my system, the Norton notification was waiting for me announcing that it had removed the .bat file from the email and quarantined it, told me what virus it was and gave me the link (above) to all the details. It's a painless and effective form of protection once you have it set up properly.

Todd
I totally agree with you about Norton Antivirus. I actually use SystemWorks which I find excellent although I admit I don't use all its features
My previous virus scanner was Mcafee but it was a real pain to use as it used ActiveX and was online long enough to carsh most times you needed a virus update. You hardly know Nortin is there until it confirms it has successfully updated the virus scanner
