Hi, Stocken,

The first time I can contribute to the disklavier group.!

I live in Sri Lanka where there is not much available in the way of
hardware. It was impossible to find 720k double density floppy's
locally.
Hence I have formatted the 1.44 2HD floppy's to double density 720 using
normal format on dos mode. You can also do it by windows by going to my
computer and right clicking (I think) to format and then select the type
as 720k but it takes a little longer. Before you format the trick is
that you need to cover the extra hole on the left side in the 2HD
diskettes (not the write protect tab but the other) using some paper and
tape as thin as possible so that you want get the disk stuck in the
drive.

Once you are in dos mode write and if you are on C: drive then you need
to write c:\format a:/f:720
If you need to check other switches just type c:\format/?

This should give you all the other formats as well.

Nice try Budds, but this will not work for Windows XP users because you
don't get the 720Kb option when formatting a floppy via GUI, and in XP's
command prompt (fake DOS mode) "/f:720" is not a valid parameter for the
format command.

Re: [disklavier] Format a 720 Disk with Windows XP

2002-10-04 by Chine-Chine Wang

OK folks - I *think* I just found out a way to format 720Kb double
density floppies in Windows XP. Here's how:

1. Have at hand one FORMATTED and BLANK double density floppy disk -
let's call it disk A; and another double density floppy that you want to
format - lets call it disk B.

2. Insert disk A into your floppy drive. Go to My Computer ->
right-click on the floppy drive -> select "Copy Disk".

3. Press [Enter] to let disk A be the source disk, wait.

4. When prompted, eject disk A and insert disk B. Press [Enter] to let
disk B be the destination disk, wait again... and voila.

Tested out once and it worked. And for that matter, your "disk A"
doesn't necessarily need to be blank - after the image copying is done,
WinXP can delete the duplicated files from "disk B".

***I know this is a bit round-about and I'd much prefer having a program
that does this job - unfortunately the market is probably too small for
somebody to write one. I've tried copying different versions of
format.com to WinXP, but didn't work. The above method is the only one
that worked for me without requiring the use of another computer (the
only thing you do need is a formatted double density disk to be the
source).

Hope this is of some help for people who have older Disklaviers and
Windows XP computers!

Don't know much about xp but doesn't it allow a dos prompt? If so, can
you format from there with the good old dos format?

Re: [disklavier] Format a 720 Disk with Windows XP

2002-10-04 by Carol Beigel

That certainly sounds like a very clever idea! I think laptop manufacturers
have shot themselves in the foot by using XP and Windows 2000. Too many
computer controlled gizzmos still use DOS. I wanted to buy a new laptop a
couple of months ago, but decided it was a waste of money. It would have
cost $1700 and still would not have run DOS or have a built-in microphone.
I found the perfect unit I needed for $350 - a Compaq Ipaq. It runs my
tuning software, controls my telescope, works with the GPS and fits in my
pocket! It would be nice if someone were to write some MIDI software for
the thing (a program is available for the Palm pilots)so I could use it with
my Disklavier!

My piano tuner also recently purchased the Compaq and he is running his
tuning software on it. And he is 74 years young...

He really likes it!
