do you run it from the disk?
what is the program called and what version is it?

All this under XP.

If the .FIL in not in a protectyed yamaha disk I allways use
SEQ2MIDI whith no problems.

I hope this helps.

Re: [disklavier] giebler under xp

2003-10-29 by Chine-Chine Wang

My theory is that Giebler might be able to function under XP provided that your hard drive's file system is formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS. Windows XP can run a lot of DOS programs, but since Giebler needs to write the converted/copied files to the hard drive, the problem probably lies within DOS programs' inability to write on NTFS partitions.

you have to get out of the windows desktop and go to the c prompt

please explain exactly how you are able to run your program in XP

do you run it from the disk?

what is the program called and what version is it?

was it represented by giebler to be capable of running in the xp environment?

what command do you type to execute?

do you do it from the windows desktop "run"; box, or some other way?

i would love to be able to use the giebler program

I have a giebler'r ultilies version that i brought last june.
I don´t think that the version is new.

IT WORKS UNDER XP!

But only with 2HD disks. (1.4 megs)

I have used it a few times, mainly when I download files from yamaha
with the yamaha downloader that writes the "special yamaha format"

Extract indiviual files to HD and the convert them to midi also with
the giebler utility.

All this under XP.

If the .FIL in not in a protectyed yamaha disk I allways use
SEQ2MIDI whith no problems.

I hope this helps.

Re: [disklavier] giebler under xp

2003-10-30 by Carol Beigel

That is certainly an interesting theory! I know when I installed a new hard
drive for my Windows 98 I used the FAT32. What is NTFS? I have a Compaq
Evo with Windows XP Professional ; a very expensive laptop, and it doesn't
do squat with any of these DOS utilities we have been discussing. It runs
AnaDisk, but not Giebler. Won't format a 720k disk. Certainly won't run
the dkvcopy program. Taping over the holes in the floppy disk doesn't help
either! I never got Giebler to work with 1.44 disks. So how come some users
of XP can does this and not others? How can you tell how your XP system is
formatted?

Greetings Carol,

Wednesday, October 29, 2003, 4:31:49 PM, you wrote:

If you installed xp on a new machine it is probably NTFS.

You can have several partitions and some can be NTFS and others FAT or
FAT32. You can see what any of them are by right mouse clicking on the
icon for the drive letter of the partition of interest in my computer
or the windows explorer. Choose properties and the window that pops up
will include the file the file system.

If the problem is inability to write to an NTFS partition, all that
might be needed is to create a partition that is FAT. It is easiest to
do this with Partition Magic. You can even pick up an older version
for almost nothing on e-bay. I paid $15 or less for version 7 but it
does not do the fancy after the fact multi boot stuff that I wanted so
I had to buy version 8 too.

You can probably run the program from the NTFS partition but may need
to put the data files on the FAT partition.

By the way, there are all sorts of other possible reasons that a
program would not run under xp. One thing that might help is running
the program in a compatibility mode such as that for win 98 but there
is still no guarantee. This is easy to try. Just right click the
program and choose properties and then the page for compatibility and
check the box to use a compatibility mode and choose one. Still might
not work if the program is trying to do things that are just not
allowed in NT and other reasons too.

In spite of all of this, I have virtually no programs that do not run
under xp with lots of time spent configuring and working around
issues. Some work marginally so I use the dual boot system when I need
it.

Re: giebler under xp

2003-10-30 by Jorge Fernandez Moreno

My computer has 2 NTFS Hard disks under XP ang Giebler works fine,
but only with 2HD FDs (1440 kb) so the problem seems not to be on
the Hard disk side. In fact there is no nned for giebler to use low
level call for the hard disk (but it is needed to bypass the "copy
protection" on the yamaha FDs) XP has not low level calls for DD
disketes, it simply consider this an obsolete media.
I think that even the hardware on some new computers can not handle
DD FDs, so the tip following may not work on some new coputers.

If you have and old clavinova or DKV than only handles 2DD FDs
(720kb) then giebler will not work on this disks under XP.

Some one give us this tip in the past:

1 Get an old DOS boot FD
2 Boot the computer with this disk (now you will not have acces to
the Hard disk)
3 Use the giebler under DOS ahd try to convert the files using only
Flopies.
4 When you have finished the conversions, boot XP again and use the
conveter files.

Very tricky, but should work.

need to put the data files on the FAT partition.

I have done this several times.
Right now, I have some MID files tha came from Yamaha FD (.fil) on
my hard disk.
I did the conversion under XP using giebler utilities.
Both one to upload from FD to Hardisk and one to convert from
giebler format of ESEQ (not .FIL but .Yxx something I always erase
this work files) to .MID

Hope this helps

The problem is not with yamaha old DD FDs in old pianos, is with
Microsoft deciding not to support this media any more.

RE: [disklavier] giebler under xp

2003-10-31 by Jason Stein

Carol and all:

Using XP I have been able to format my HD 1.44 disks and turn them into 720k disks. I do this by going to the dos prompt, typing format a: /T:80 /N:9. In order to successfully do this I have to use black tape and tape over the hole on the bottom of the disk. This then turns my 1.44 disks into 720k disks – ready to use in my Disklavier or DOU.

To answer your question about what NTFS is: NTFS is a more advanced File system for Windows. It came out when Windows NT was launched to address some of the security and performance issues of FAT. NTFS is an acronym which stands for NT (new technology) File System. To find out if your hard drive is using NTFS, go to Windows Explorer and Right click on your C-drive – go to Properties and under the “General” tab should be the File System.

I’ve never used giebler, but the disk that is created above is a 720k disk – so I would imagine it might work.

Also, please note that Windows XP has a compatibility mode that allows it to work as if it was Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Win2k (SP5) or Windows NT. To access this compatibility mode – create a shortcut on your desktop, right click the shortcut, go to Properties, then go to the Compatibility Tab. Here is where you can change the compatibility mode. You can even do this with DOS Prompt – so that the DOS Prompt will run in Win 95 mode. I would think that giebler would run with this compatibility mode using 720k disks, but I’ve never really used it.

If someone could give me a real high level on what giebler does again…..

Boy, it’s nice to finally contribute to this group. I’m Microsoft, IBM, Sun, and Cisco certified, but with the Disklavier – really a novice.

How can you tell how your XP system is
formatted?

My theory is that Giebler might be able to function under XP provided that
your hard drive's file system is formatted as FAT32 instead of
NTFS. Windows XP can run a lot of DOS programs, but since Giebler needs to
write the converted/copied files to the hard drive, the problem probably
lies within DOS programs' inability to write on NTFS partitions.
