homemade pianodisk on DKV won't play

homemade pianodisk on DKV won't play

2003-12-14 by Jean Debefve

Hi all

I tried to burn a CD with Mark Fontana's midtopianoCD software, and
did not succeed in having it play on my DU1A Yamaha upright, equipped
with the latest system update.
I used the pianodisk format, and burned it on a sound CD, closing it
carefully. But it will just play some notes, let some others stuck,
with no relationship whatsoever with the original midi files.

As I guess the software (http://dp70.dyndns.org/mid2pianocd/ -a
shareware) might not be in cause, I have three hypotheses :

1°) I am dumb and miss some important point... (Although I seem to
follow the instructions. I use Nero 5.5 for burning, and Sound Forge
to take care of the .wav files when I try to add something onto the
CD's blank left track.) Could also be a matter of Type 1 versus Type 0
format but the pianodisk format is said to read and play both.

2° ) the yamaha CD drive doesn't read homemade CD's - a way to protect
them from "illegal" copy;

3°) the Mark III system does not read pianodisk CDs if not configured
to do so. But then I could not find a hint about this in the yamaha
doc...

Has anyone encoutered the same problem ? Has anyone succesfully played
an original Pianodisk CD on a MarkIII system ? Has anyone tried to
copy a Pianosoft CD or Pianodisk CD and have them play ?

Remember, this is third party software trying to emulate proprietary data
formats. I doubt if you did anyting wrong. I have used Nero to make copies
of Yamaha CDs and QRS CDs (back-ups of course) and they have worked..
Getting MIDI information to play on audio CDs is a lock trickier than it
sounds. Although I can't remember which is which, I believe that Yamaha
puts audio on the Left channel and the MIDI on the Right, and PianoDisc does
the opposite? PianoDisc only reads MIDI 0 files. Anyway, all MIDI on an
audio CD must go through an analog to MIDI converter.

At this time, the Yamaha CD drive does not read MIDI files you burn to
folders on the CDs yourself.

Do you mean that Pianomation disks (I understand that's what QRS is)
will play on the DKV ? Or do you, lucky one, have both systems ?
(I wonder what would result from installing a Pianomation system on a
DKV ... :-) Will they cooperate, and play along each other's
tunes? :-P )

That might be part of my problem... I checked the "disk and files format
for midi piano players" chart in this group's files section and /wishful
read/ the Pianomation line instead of the Pianodisk one... I'll check it
all again tomorrow, I'm afraid my files are type 1 as I use Cubase SX to
build them..

Then hopefully Mark Fontana -the creator of the midtopianoCD software-
will soon extend his program to include the Yamaha system./ /We could
then burn our own CDs and have our beloved Yamahas play them. I work
with singers, and it would be a real delight to produce homemade
performances, not even mentionning jazz or classical instrumental duets...

Still I wonder : do the DKV play /normal/ Pianodisk and/or Pianomation
CDs ?

By the way, thanks for your help : you made me have a closer look to the
QRS site (http://www.qrsmusic.com/), and Wow ! they even have a
violin-player, an accordion player, and some percussions... Very nice !
My bank account is staring at me with a desperate look... :-!

The DKV will play all QRS Pianomation and PianoDisc CDs and the QRS
floppies. I do not know about PianoDisc floppies, but I think so. I think
you will find all the QRS music at the same volume of 64, but they sound
okay to me.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the info, however sad :-( it is... Did you try the
Pianocorder format ? It's such a pity that neither the DKV and the
Pianomation implementation are not ready yet, but that's the drawback of
shareware. I'd be ready to pay for such a program, if I was shure it
worked
The difficulty of the challenge for the programmer might also have to do
with the number of midi channels involved in the phase-shifted yamaha
system, as a former mail by Pianobench on the DUG group (7/12/2003 02:54
to be precise...) seemed to suggest.

hopefully more on the subject soon !
