Moving piano

2004-08-05 by Bill Tice

I am moving from the North Bay California area to Denver Colorado. What precautions should I take to avoid the sound board cracking in the dry Denver climate?

Thanks Bill

When Yamaha grand pianos are shipped worldwide from the factory, they
are sealed in an airtight bag with a baggy of desiccant inside. That
would probably be overkill for a piano being trucked from North Bay to
Denver. The present moisture in the wood will take some time before it
most of it evaporates into the air. Ideally, when the piano is delivered
to your new home, it should be kept in a room at 42% RH. I doubt that
many people are able to do that. You may wish to put a humidifier in
the room, especially during the heating season, and monitor the RH.

A Dampp-Chaser humidifier installed beneath the piano is also a
possibility. For it to work effectively on a grand, you need to isolate
the air beneath with a to-the-floor cover.

Re: [disklavier] Moving piano

I moved from Michigan to Denver almost ten years ago. I kept that disklavier
about three years and never had a problem with lack of humidity affecting the
piano. I have since upgraded to a pro which was purchased in Denver. I do
have a furnace humidifier which I would recommend as winter humidity levels in
your home could dip below ten percent without one. A furnace humidifier
should keep winter humidity levels in your home between 30 and 40 percent. When it
gets really cold the humidifier level must be reduced to eliminate
condensation damage to your windows and drywall. Summer humidity levels seem to range
between 25 and 50 percent depending on the weather and shouldn't need further
alteration in my opinion.
