Self-calibration

2004-10-02 by deedee_tv

A tech came to my house today to tune/work on my DU1A. He spent part
of his time running the piano through a "self-calibration" mode.
This was initiated from the DKC55RCD controller module with a series
of key depressions. How is this accomplished?

There are two modes available on the Disklavier - Test
Mode and Maintenance Mode. All the software needed for
calibrating and testing the unit is included in the
"box" - as opposed to other systems that require a
"test box" that plugs into the unit.

The Maintenance Mode matches the computer to the
condition of the piano. This is especially important
for recording purposes. As the felts settle in the
piano, or seasonal changes affect the wood parts, the
geometry of the piano action can change enough to cause
lost motion or loss of power. The pedals are
calibrated as well as the least amount of energy
required to play the piano softly.

It is possible to press the wrong buttons yourself when
in these modes, and end up doing a global adjustment
you did not want!

To add to Carol's note, the "self-calibration" affects only the
Disklavier's recording and playback features, not how the standalone
piano plays manually from the keyboard. Your tech probably first spent
time, in addition to tuning, to insuring acoustic regulation--that is,
making sure that the keyboard and pedals were adjusted and properly
operating.

A state of acoustic regulation is a prerequisite for the service done
using the Test and Maintenance Modes. That may be another good reason
for Disklavier owners not to dive into those modes, even if they know
how to.
