This concerns me, as floppy disks are going the way of the dodo. Case
in point, no Apple macs even have them anymore, and most new computers
only offer them as an option.

Even if floppy drives are not included on many new
computers, if you are going to own a Disklavier, then
own a floppy drive. I bought a new one cheap -
external floppy drive that plugs into a USB port on
any computer. Works great.

Its not that floppy disks aren't usefull, it's just
that so much software is sold as downloaded versions
over the internet. Almost everyone these days has an
internet connection.

When we upgrade computers around here, we never part
with one that runs DOS on a FAT32 system just in case
we need it for the Disklavier. I figure my DKV will
last the rest of my life, and so I am making provision
that I have the ability to back up and move my library
of songs. And a floppy drive is certainly cheap
insurance.

I own 2...

We bought the pianos knowing they used floppy disks... so stock up on cheap
usb disk drives and as Carol said, always have a system around that will
work for you. In my case, I use my computer (mac laptop) to archive my
files. Don't forget to backup your data!

Curiously, now that floppies are "obsolete," you can actually purchase 4x USB drives. My LaCie 4x drive cost me about $35. Reading and writing to it is so fast (relative to its capacity) that it actually feels like a viable medium.

Curious.

Hi Carl and others,

You do not need a computer to make the floppy boot disk. You only need
a blank HD floppy. The Disklavier will turn it into a boot disk. The
instructions are on our FTP site.

This reasoning makes sense for someone who owns an older disklavier,
but I am disappointed that the Mark IV's upgrade process continues to
depend on old technology. It is perfectly easy to burn files onto CD
these days. In my opinion, the Mark IV should not require anything
but a CD for upgrading. Even better would be to be able to transmit
everything over wireless or ethernet and avoid removable media
altogether. But I guess these issues will always be relevant; as the
industry transitions to newer and better storage technologies, there
are always periods in which both the old and new technologies must
coexist.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
