Pianodisc on Yamaha Disklavier?

Pianodisc on Yamaha Disklavier?

2005-09-14 by jheitzeb1

I currently own a 6 foot concert grand piano with pianodisc system
installed. I have a
large library of pianodiscs. I am trading my current piano in for a
Mark IV 7 foot disklavier
grand piano. (The new piano is on the way, but not here yet!)

I took one of my pianodiscs in to try in a baby grand piano at the
store which had the
disklavier system ( I think it was the Mark III) installed and it
was not able to read the
pianodisc.

The salesman told me that Yamaha dealer has told him that these
pianodiscs will be
readable in January 2006.

I would like to use my old pianodiscs on my new piano. Do anyone
have any suggestions?

I understand that there is a software utility that will convert
pianodisc files to midi, is this
correct and if so, has anyone done so successfully.

I am also a Macintosh user and I cannot find any midi editting
software for use on my
Mac. I have been using gnmidi on an old PC to convert from type 1 to
type 0 and convert
to pianodisc format. Should I use this same procedure to make new
midi floppies for the
disklavier system?

Thanks everyone in advance for your help.
-Joan

Joan, by "disc" you are referring to CDs, right?

It is true that current Disklaviers cannot play a certain variant of
PianoDisc CDs. It sounds like Yamaha has figured that out and will be
issuing a firmware update that will correct the problem, as long as
you're willing to wait a few months. (Converting the CDs yourself would
be hard to do without your existing PianoDisc system.)

PianoDisc recently informed its dealers and technicians that, starting
this fall, they will be encrypting their CDs to break compatibility with
the Disklavier and other competing products. All PianoDisc systems will
have to be updated to play the new discs. It is unclear when or if the
Disklavier will support future PianoDisc CDs.

I, too, received that notice about PianoDisc new
encryption starting this Fall. I can't believe they
would do this to their own customers! Usually PianoDisc
upgrades means new hardware.

However, be aware, that future purchases of PianoDisc
CDs may NOT work on Disklaviers. Another very good
reason to own a Yamaha product. At least their stuff
is backwardly compatible.

Actually I was referring to the piano floppy discs. I like the piano only music and have
quite a collection of the pianodisc "floppy discs" (over 50 in fact) that I would like to use
on my new Yamaha DSV when it comes in.

Has anyone used the software from Giebler to convert the pianodiscs to midi .... and what
procedure is best followed to do so.

Thanks,
-Joan
