Need Midi Help with Dom-30

Need Midi Help with Dom-30

2005-12-03 by sstapels

I am hoping someone can steer me to a good resource. I have a 8
foot baby grand with disklavier including the old control wagon
dkw10. In addion I have the Dom-30 unit.

We have always loved to setup for playing music in our house and have
recently connected a computer to the setup and that makes it so much
more enjoyable as we can make playlists and not have to use disk.

In case anyone is interested in hooking their computer to the
disklavier I highly recommed the site http://www.carolrpt.com/ she
has step by step instructions that were invaluable to me.

However I am having a bit of trouble with the Dom-30 unit when I play
midi trought the computer. It seams that the Dom-30 unit is not
selecting the proper voice like it does when I play the song via the
dkw10 disk drive.

I have the midi out from the computer into the midi in of the piano,
and then have the out of the pinano going to the Dom-30 just like
before the computer.

Thanks in advance for any possible resources to help me set up and
configure this so that I may enjoy my mulitrack Midi files.

When you play from your computer, I suspect that you are trying to
play Standard MIDI files that reference voices in the General MIDI
(GM) sound set. Unfortunately, the DOM-30 predates GM. The DOM-30 has
an older sound set call Disk Orchestra Collection (DOC).

During file playback, a MIDI file (or an E-SEQ file, Yamaha's pre-
MIDI file format) sends messages (called patch changes or program
changes) to the tone generator telling it which voice to use for each
track. These messages contain a voice number from 1 to 128. Voice 8,
for example, in the DOC sound set is not necessarily the same voice
as voice 8 in GM.

In the early 1990s, the keyboard industry developed the set of voices
called GM so that customers could count on the correct voices being
used during playback regardless as to which keyboard or tone
generator is used. Obviously, not every keyboard in the world has GM,
but most consumer-level keyboards have GM and computers usually have
a built-in GM sound set.

Your best bet is to retire the DOM-30 and add a DSR1 to your
Disklavier. The DSR1 has DOC, GM, and XG (Yamaha's expansion of GM).
In addition, it has support for high density disks and Type 0 and
Type 1 Standard MIDI files. It has a remote control. The buttons on
the front panel work almost exactly like those on the Mark IIXG and
Mark III Disklaviers (except that the Mark III also has a CD feature).

Hi

The DOM30 is very old and is Pre GM Midi it uses a set of voices
compatable with the early CVP painos. These were not GM. What
program do you use from Carols site? I hope it is Yamplayer !!!

Do you have the list of voices for the DOM30? If not I may have
them somewhere.

What files are you trying to play on it? Are they "Midi" files or
are they "Disk Orchestra Collection" disks?

Re: Need Midi Help with Dom-30

Thanks for the help.

I was using files that were copied from disks that were created for
the Dom-30. The songs play fine when I put the disk in the piano and
the additional tracks are passed through the MIDI out to the DOM-30.

When I put them on the computer I converted them from the yamaha file
format to MIDI. I am guessing that I probably need to play these in
the original format.

I appreciate the answers

Good afternoon, everyone.

Scott, I need more information about what you did to convert the
files. It sounds to me as though the conversion program not only
changed the file type from E-SEQ to SMF but also converted the patch
lists from DOC to GM. If you can do the same file conversion without
converting the patch lists, then you would have the desired results.

Re: Need Midi Help with Dom-30

Thanks,

I believe that you are correct. I used Yamplayr batch convert, and
my guess was what you just described. I think if I use Yamplayr to
play the original file I will be good.

I have been using vanBasco's Karaoke Player as I think the playlists
are easier to use.

Thanks for the help

Hi Scott

Yamplayer will play DOM 30 disks without any conversion.
Now that you have converted them you will need to ADD a map file.

Add the files to the playlist as normal or just add the MUSIC.dir
file.
Now Right click on the Music.dir file and click on "Attach Voice
Mapfile" Select on dom.map click on Open and away you go.
