Disklavier

Well I started playing with the system this morning – Here's what I 
learned so far:

Mark IV (I have a DC2M4) Stats:

SSID (System ID) = DKV2200D5
Speed = 11Mbps (so it's most likely an 802.11b protocol)
DHCP configuration
IP address assigned by DHCP on my system = 192.168.88.14 (Typical 
private IP address)
Gateway and DHCP server IP address = 192.168.88.1
Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
No data encryption is used – in other words it's an open network – 
no WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) – So your neighbors with 
802.11b could see the Mark IV network.

That's about the extent of my discoveries so far.

I am utilizing a MS Windows OS and a linksys wireless router.  
Pretty typical stuff for a home wireless setup.

Unfortunately – I can't seem to access any shared resources on the 
Mark IV – Nothing shows up for me to access when I connect to the 
Mark IV network.  No shared disk drives or anything like that.  I'm 
not entirely sure, but I think it's because I don't have a "tablet" 
system.  It might be that it's only the Mark IV's with tablet 
controllers (DC3M4t and above) that allow you to download new .JPG 
images to the piano that can be used for changing the background 
image on the tablet controller.  Since I have the Mark IV with just 
the PRC, I don't have that capability, so maybe the piano just 
doesn't give me visibility into directories thru the wireless 
network. 

The thing that's just a real shame, is that with this wonderful 
ability to wireless connect with the Mark IV, I'm still forced 
to "sneaker net" MIDI files and the like from my home computer using 
a thumb drive (USB) or a floppy disk to the piano.  Seems like an 
extremely valuable feature addition for the system would be the 
ability to simply drag & drop data/MIDI files using the wireless 
network.  Hopefully, since the entire infrastructure already exists 
for this functionality, Yamaha will implement it soon.

Have you tried using one of the few midi over ip tools like ipMIDI  to
send midi files from the PC to the disklavier

I have a Mark IV with tablet and Macintosh with airport wireless.  I was able to load .jpg 
files only to the disklavier hard drive for use with the tablet in slideshow mode.

Last fall, I talked with a guy at the Yamaha service & support center ( 1-800-854-1569) 
and he told me that presently the Mark IV does not allow users to download .mid files to 
the hard drive.  They  have not allowed access to this part of the hard drive as they don't 
want customers to screw up system and files on their hard drive.  It is ashame as I would 
love to download the .mid files that I have directly from my Mac.  Currently I transfer them 
to a 3.5" floppy and load them that way.

Note:   When connecting allow 10 minutes or so for the DSK #####  to show up as the 
network to connect to and then the "Picture Folder" should appear on the Macintosh or PC 
desktop and drag jpeg files  into it.

I tried connecting a cross-over ethernet cable directly to download jpeg files and that does 
NOT work.  He informed me that the people in Japan say this feature is NOT working 
either.  The wireless method is working.

FYI: Here are some other things that the guy at service/support told me:

(1) Most of the "future use" stuff and features for Mark IV are still in works and will not  be 
available for awhile, possibly another year.  The slots are all there to expand the 
capabilities for future.

(2)  The ability to connect wirelessly to internet and download midis (to buy) from internet 
is already available on disklavier clavanova (keyboards) thru usb connection.  They hope to 
have this feature (wireless internet) buying of midis and downloading for Mark IV and are 
working on that.

(3)  The ability to wirelessly download upgrades to the system of the Mark IV is future 
development as well.  Currently the wireless network is there, for jpeg transfer, but the 
folders that contain system and midis are protected now to prevent people accidently 
erasing info.  They will set up some sort of temp folder to transfer the midis bought online 
and password to add these to your hard drive .....  The disklavier has an underlying Linux 
system computer onboard.

(4)  Really not much in the way of "smartkey" software available as the demand doesn't 
seem to be there.   I still  did  not get any place where these are sold.

I put in a request for a search  routine for finding songs in a more efficient manner.

I would like to make a backup of my current hard drive and he says that I can accomplish 
this with a USB thumb-drive.  Has anyone accomplished this task, and if so, what kind of 
USB drive did you use that worked?
