What other manufacturers' discs (beyond Yamaha) are compatible with my Mark IV?

What other manufacturers' discs (beyond Yamaha) are compatible with my Mark IV?

2006-10-31 by robjohan

I have a new Yamaha DGC1M4 Mark IV piano and I am trying to find out
what other manufacturer's discs will play in my system. Are QRS,
Pianodisc, Pianomation, and other non-Yamaha discs compatible with the
Mark IV? Does anyone have a list of non-yamaha compatible discs?
Freddy at Yamaha suggested I post this message on this site. The main
reason that I am asking is that we purchased the Disklavier for my
daughter who is an aspiring musical theater/singer and we want her to
be able to rehearse at home with pre-recorded piano accompaniment. She
will be starring in Annie Get Your Gun and Thoroughly Modern Millie in
a few months and I am having a hard time finding these song files (I
could not find them in any of the Yamaha discs). I did find some of
the Annie Get Your Gun songs on a QRS CD (Broadway Musicals I QRS
Catalog #400401) but there is a disclaimer that says that "QRS Music
CD's produced after 1/1/05 are designed expressly for the use with QRS
Pianomation Systems, and we do not guarantee compatibility with other
brands ..." Can anyone out there give us some giudance? Thanks!

Hi Rob,

I'll bet for less than the cost of the disks (if they were even
available), you could pay the rehearsal accompanist for your daughter's
shows to stop by your home and record your daughter's songs on the
Disklavier. That way, the recordings will be in the correct keys, match
the original arrangements from the shows, and better match her
performance.

Even if the shows are not in rehearsal yet, it's very likely the
accompanist is already lined up and may have the scores in hand.

If you buy either QRS or PianoDisc songs on FLOPPY
disks, they are compatible with a Disklavier. When
MIDI files come on a CD, the MIDI part is encoded and
now locked on these new copy protection schemes. You
don't really want the audio anyway, since you daughter
wants to do the singing. I personally have found the
QRS floppies to be quite fine.

I just bought a PianoDisc floppy "Piano Pleasures" PD9201 and it
won't play on my MarkIII. Shouldn't this floppy work in a
disklavier? When I insert the floppy in my PC, it says it is
unformatted (I don't know if that's what it should do or not). Any
ideas?

Thank you.

Re: What other manufacturers' discs (beyond Yamaha) are compatible with my Mark IV?

Piano discs do NOT work in Disklaviers. There is a program that can
convert the disk to a form that would be readable by the Disklavier.
gnmidi.zip - Guenter Nagler's MIDI file utility. Excellent! Shareware.
I believe a demo of this software is available on this site in the
files under 'Utilities'. You might want to read about the software at
http://gnmidi.com/.

Hope this helps with your question.

Greetings Joan,

correct me if i am wrong but i don't think that GNMIDI converts PD floppies for use on the DKV.

GNMIDI is an excellent program and does all sorts of things that would be useful to a DKV user and every one should have a copy but i don't think it does this.

Piano Disc floppies or CD's do not play on a Disklavier.
There is a program available that converts Piandisc files to midi files that can be played on thre disklavier.
see http://www.giebler.com/
The program is a DOS program and may or may not work with Windows.
I have the program running under XP and have converted several PD floppies. It can be time consuming but works fine after you figure out how to use it.

I have not?found a way?to play PD cd's on a Disklavier.

Yes, you are right that is the program (www.giebler.com). It does
work. Both the gnmidi and the giebler programs are good to have if
you own a PC.
