Beginner question on writing midi files to floppy and playing them.

Beginner question on writing midi files to floppy and playing them.

2006-12-22 by k1ksc

Sorry to ask such a basic question but I have been reading various FAQ's and have tried to
search the posts on this group but don't seem to be finding the answer to my question. I
have a new DGC1 and have located several midi files on the net that I would like to write to
floppy and play. Simple enough to down load the files and write to floppy on my Mac but
when I insert the floppy into the Disklavier it indicates no songs found. Since these files are
from various sites and are piano only I am under the impression that I don't have to do any
editing or conversions with a midi program.

Thanks and happy holidays, John Isella

The Disklavier sees MIDI files on floppy disks
formatted with an IBM computer. I don't think Mac's
work. However, I was successful a while back using a
mini DIN cable from a Powerbook to the To Host port on
the Disklavier, playing MIDI files from the hard drive
through software called Metro 5.

If you own a Disklavier, you should also own a cheap PC
that runs native DOS. Windows 98 and lower work just
fine. Try usedlaptops.com

You should be able to format a Windows compatible floppy on your Mac
using Disk Utility. Placing the midi files on such a disk from the
Mac should work. Are you using OS X or MacOS?

Thanks Carol, it does indeed work when using a PC, I will have to
fool with the Mac setup but at least we have a working config with
the PC. Happy Holidays...
