New Google Group has been set up.

New Google Group has been set up.

2007-03-21 by Todd Muncy

Here are the details:
Your group has been created
The following information has been sent to you in email:
Homepage: http://groups.google.com/group/disklavier Group email:
I haven't set up invitation lists or directly added members yet, so for the moment you'll need to apply if you're in a hurry to get in. I have no immediate plans to shut down the Yahoo group for the forseeable future. Many current members don't receive emails or digests and may only pop in once in a blue moon. In the meantime it will be great to have another 100 MB of storage.
I'll leave all the boring discussions of Yahoo and Google's political correctness to others. The market what people prefer.

I have sent invitations to all 1688 members of record. It will take a couple days before they arrive since Google wants to moderate a mailing of that size (not a surprise). In the meantime feel free to apply directly for faster service. I decided against directly enrolling everyone, since many are probably not receiving emails and/or are no longer interested. This should pare things down to truly active members.

Anyone want to volunteer to copy the entire midi file structure over to the new site?

We need a title page photo. Please post your nominees.

BTW, I don't think I told the group, but our Intergalactic World Headquarters for the group (my laptop) relocated from Flemington, NJ to Minneapolis, MN a year ago. That partially explains why I've been barely active in discussions, but I'm still reading all the posts every day.

Let's see what happens when the bulk of the invitations hit in a few days. I put out about 140 invites in small bunches that did not require moderating and about a third of them have accepted in the first 12 hours.

The easiest way to make the break will be to use the old email platform to keep telling people it's been declared obsolete and to move to the new one, once it has taken root.

Carl, do you want to be set up as a second manager of the group so you can manage the file vault, issue invites, approve membership requests, etc.? Anyone else interested as well?

Everyone should receive an invitation within a few days. To shortcut the process, just go to the new site http://groups.google.com/group/disklavier and request to join. Currently I am approving about 15 new members per hour.

Let's NOT have 1700 people sending "Add me" messages to all 1700 members. That would be 2.9 million messages BTW.

The transition is greatly simplified by automatically subscribing all existing users. And you have the option of specifying whether or not a batch of users is added as web only or regular email delivery. Then the users don't have to do anything. It just works. And the URL they need to visit to see the group web site is appended to the bottom of each new message, so there really is no need to make subscribers manually join the new group. However, I respect Todd's decision to do whatever he feels is best.

Re: [disklavier] New Google Group has been set up.

2007-03-22 by Todd Muncy

Ok, I have dubbed thee a manager of the Google group Carl. Feel free to approve any pending applications you run across. Three came in before I finished this paragraph. If you or anyone else can find the time, it would be great begin duplicating the file vault contents on the google site.

The potential risk of directly enrolling such a large group is that it will probably result in a few hundred long dormant members receiving email notifications from Google that they have been involuntarily signed up. If that causes Google to receive a dozen quick complaints, that can result in them deleting the group for abuse and greatly complicating things.

When the dust settles, we can review who hasn't responded and enroll them in small groups that won't cause a big blip. I'd also rather have someone accept the invite and choose to receive mail, rather than enroll them directly with a no email option they might not know to revise later.

That's great considering the very international makeup of our group. I wonder if there's a British English variation (with right hand navigation of course) for our friends in the UK ;-).

  I forgot to tell you.

One nice thing in the new gropup is that every thing is in spanish!
  (exept mesagge bodies of course)

I assume that you see thisi English, but the same should apply to german, french, italian, etc.
  Even japanese or chinese?

    Now I am in!

As a celebration of the new disk space I uploaded 2 small MID files that my son (now 24) recorded some years ago.

(You can erase it when needed)

Both are easy listening music from Mexican composers.

"Maria de los Angeles" was made by order for my grand mother's 15th birthday in 1900, on those days, she lived in a very small town north of Mexico, near Texas

"Las tristezas de Pierrot" was a piano player roll from the 1920's that I used to play, by foot, in the 60's the roll was lost but I found the music in a book and my son recorded it for me.

Nothing great but I love both.

    Enjoy..

Thanks Todd. I will continue to approve applications as I see them, and I will try to take some time to mirror the uploads. By the way, I was thinking it might be kind of cool to leave new uploads separate, but after they have been available for a few months, add them to one large ZIP file that keeps getting bigger. That way the ZIP compression will be even more efficient, and it will make it a lot easier for new visitors to download everything with one click. I'll see what I can do about that.

Ok, I have dubbed thee a manager of the Google groupCarl. Feel free to approve any pending applications you run across. Three came inbefore I finished this paragraph. If you or anyone else can find the time, it would be greatbegin duplicating the file vault contents on the google site.
The potential risk of directly enrolling such a large group is that it will probably result in a few hundred long dormant members receiving email notifications from Google that they have been involuntarily signed up. If that causes Google to receive a dozen quick complaints, thatcan result in them deleting the group for abuse and greatly complicating things.
When the dust settles, we can review who hasn't responded and enroll them in small groups that won't cause a big blip. I'd also rather have someone accept the invite and choose to receive mail, rather than enroll them directly with ano emailoption they might not know to revise later.

Yes Todd, I'd be happy to help with that. Thanks.

Let's see what happens when the bulk of the invitations hit in a few days. I put out about 140 invites in small bunches that did not require moderating and about a third of them have accepted in the first 12 hours.
The easiest way to make the break will be to use the old email platform to keep telling people it's been declared obsolete andto move to the new one, once it has taken root.
Carl, do you want to be set up as a second manager of the group so you can manage the file vault, issue invites, approve membership requests, etc.? Anyone else interested as well?

I think you also have the option of doing bulk adds for members who don't want to receive emails. I would suggest you sort the list by the various members' email preferences and add everyone to the new group. My biggest concern is that if you fracture the community and we have half of the members subscribed to one group and the other half subscribed to the other, then I won't be sure that my comments and questions are reaching everyone, and I will be obliged to send a message to both groups and also probably provoke a lot of confusion as various members from each group reply. I think it would be better to make a clean break of it and standardize on one platform or the other.
