Political Correctness Crap

2007-03-23 by Todd Muncy

Pardon the plain talk, but I have no patience for all this crap about political correctness and patriotism. Do you analyze Kellogg's human rights record each morning before eating your corn flakes? Yahoo vs. Google will be settled by who has the best product.
If you want long boring dissertations on political minutiae, I am confident that both services offer groups with many flavors of political hand wringing nonsense. That is where those discussions belong.
The good news is that by talking about pianos here and that other crap there, you won't have to contend with my opinion because I don't join those groups.
In the meantime, 100MB of storage, multiple language support, not having to supply my password every 3 hours, etc. is winning me over. The market is the only supreme court that matters and far more accurate than anything created by man (or woman to be politically correct). By that I mean, if you hate Google, don't join the parallel group, but please don't tell us why, we're all busy listening to Rhapsody in Blue.

Anyone besides me feel that 100MB is an incredibly wimpy amount of
storage considering the 2+ GB of storage Google claims to offer for each
of their email accounts?

As soon as someone uploads that 55 MB ZIP of MIDI files discussed last
week, half the space will already be consumed.

It would be nice to post some MP3s of (non-copyrighted) piano+audio
tracks as well, and at 3-4 MB a pop, that will eat up the remaining
space very quickly.

Considering that group storage is a shared resource, Google ought to be
generous with space for it. Content important enough to post for group
consumption would seemingly be more valuable for Google to scan and
index than the day-to-day blah of people's individual emails.

I'm not complaining about the Google move, by the way, just remarking on
the low storage quota. At the very least, it ought to scale with the
size of the group. (OK, I'm done preaching to the choir...)

I was referring to MP3 files that contain audio accompaniment on one
stereo channel and "analog MIDI" on the other channel. Such files could
be burned to CD and played on a Disklavier just like Yamaha's PianoSoft
Plus Audio CDs. (Or they could be streamed directly from a computer or
MP3 player to a piano equipped with "ANALOG MIDI IN" RCA jacks.)

My wife is a mezzo-soprano, and I was thinking of sharing recordings of
us performing Poulenc's "Banalites" song cycle. Obviously, a MIDI file
cannot carry the vocal performance, so this would have to be uploaded as
a piano+audio recording in MP3 format. Yamaha's analog MIDI format
doesn't compress very reliably to MP3, but we could use Pianomation or
PianoDisc format (both of which are supported by the Disklavier).

Based on the space and appropriateness concerns raised, I'll hold off on
distributing these recordings for now.

My .02 -

I've been in the internet technology industry for 10 years, and I
believe that in the case of the Disklavier group that Google has a
better product more suited to the needs of the group.

The only bitch I have about google groups is that there does not
appear to be a way to create a directory structure in the files
section to help organize files.

IE:

+files
---Jazz
---Ragtime
---Classical
---Pictures

I too would be very interested in a program that would convert
analog midi to regular midi.

Thanks, Joe

Re: [disklavier] lame Google storage allocation

Another idea would be to use extra space in an mp3 s ID3 tags to store the actual midi info. I m not sure how much room is in there, but midi is really small

Re: [disklavier] lame Google storage allocation

I just looked at the ID3 tag specification. A brief glance indicates that at least some players support tags that are around 1MB in size, so that would seem

I thought the Yamplayer developers were working on this a while back.

What may have stopped them is the threat of having the the player piano
companies invoke the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and file a lawsuit,
in spite of the fact that none of the "analog MIDI" formats include any
kind of copy protection or access control mechanism.

It is hard work, but it can be done as a plug-in for most free players. This is an example of such kind o plug-in, this one plays CDG files (KARAOKE) together

Re:lame Google storage allocation

If it is just a matter of how much FREE storage is available for a user group, I would be willing to annie up if storage can be bought. Out of 1600+ users surely a small endowement could be assembled to fund a meaningful cache.

Re:lame Google storage allocation

2007-03-24 by Fred Dismuke

Just a little post script: I don't know if anyone has looked at the
file section of this group lately, but our used space is now 19% of
100MB.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
