Recording on the Gran Touch and playing on

Recording on the Gran Touch and playing on

2007-08-04 by cmmfx

Questions to you disklavier experts . . .

I live in Poland where being a pianist is almost a national sport. I
would like to offer my Gran Touch digital piano to professional concert
pianists to record their performances.

My question is this: will their performances be expressed well on
normal disklavier pianos, meaning diklaviers with strings, or do they
need to record on a stringed disklavier to have a proper recording of
their work? Will they be able to send files to someone in another
country and have a 'normal' disklavier piano play beautifully? Could
someone effectively audition for the e-piano competition, for example?

Hope this makes sense, thanks for help.

Best,

Joe V.

Basically, recording on any Disklavier whether the
electronics are installed on an acoustic piano or an
electronic one, generates the same MIDI data. However,
the artist may react differently to what they hear
while recording, so that could affect sustain. A
vibrating string keeps vibrating until you use the
damper pedal or take your finger off the key. However,
I think the Gran Touch's software is designed well
enough to duplicate that.

Thanks Carol,

You sound like an expert (and you are!
http://www.carolrpt.com/webguide.htm ) Maybe I will have some
recordings done and forward them to you or others interested with
acoustic disklaviers to get some opinions.

I work with some univeristy piano students who love playing my Gran
Touch. They tell me their only complaints are not being able
to 'feel' the strings when they play, and the all too perfect sound
of the samples.

The pedals do not move when playing recorded performances, I assume
the recordings reflect the pedal action. Am I correct?

Thanks once again . . .

Re: [disklavier] Recording on the Gran Touch and playing on

We have done 3 recordings in the same studio - 2 were
done with a Yamaha C7 and the 3rd recording had the
piano part recorded straight from a DGT-2 to Digital
performer and then taken to the studio where some midi
tracks were replaced by some sound samplers. When
completed - most people do not know that we did not
use the C7 and are surprised to hear that a DGT-2 was
used. It is an incredibly accurate reproduction of a
piano and we love the DGT-2.

The resonating string issue is handled well by the
samples and the software, and the keyboard has the
proper touch and feel for the pianist to feel as if
they are on a regular piano.

You are also welcome to send any files to me. They will be played on
a Yamaha DC3M4. I will offer you an honest opinion of their quality.
I am also curious how well they adapt and play being initially
recorded on a Gran Touch. Thanks, Steve

Thanks to all . . . i look forward to getting some real samples on
line and continuing this discussion.

If you have not listened to the e-piano competition recordings, take
some time to download everything they have. I am sure you will be
glad to have these recordings in your collection. They have
recordigns from three seperate competitions . . . 2006 with the most
advanced and enhanced recordings . . .

Best to you all,
