Frustration part 2

Frustration part 2

2001-02-25 by DickFey@MSN.COM

My model is DKC100XG

Not sure I understand formatting the disk differently. Assumed that
a disk formatted under DOS would be all I needed.

For example, downloaded a zip file from DUG files "Dereck Barnes
Gospel for Disklavier" The note on the file says just unzip and
enjoy. I unzipped and the disklavier says "cannot execute".

Do not have advanced owners manual, will contact my dealer.

Does your model allow use of HD floppies or DD only - what did you use?

Here's what I did with the Dereck Barnes files.

I unzipped them to my PC's hard drive.

I formatted a diskette (my Disklavier supports only the 720K format so I
use FORMAT A: /F:720 ).

I copied the PIANODIR.FIL onto the diskette first (I am somewhat
superstitious about this - I just think it should go first).

I then copied the rest of the Dereck Barnes files to diskette.

This diskette should be ready to pop into your Disklavier and play.

If this doesn't work for you then here's an alternate method that just has
to work for you.

You could try using the utilties in dkvutils.zip. I believe it is in the
"files" area (some day I hope to be able to get back into the Disklavier
eGroup but Yahoo insists on making it very difficult).

As before you unzip the files to your hard drive and format the diskette.

You then start EEXPLORE (one of the DKVUTILS utiltiies) and select "A:" for
the diskette location.

Using EEXPLORE, you then create the PIANODIR index file by right-clicking
on the name and selecting "Create Index".

Using a DOS command prompt window (or Windows Explorer), you then copy all
the Dereck Barnes files to diskette except for the PIANODIR.FIL.

Then go back to the EEXPLORE window and rebuild the index (by
right-clicking on PIANODIR.FIL) and selecting "Rebuild Index". You do this
twice, once to get the list of names and once to add the list to the
PIANODIR.FIL.

The diskette is now ready to pop into your Disklavier.

I use this utiltiy all the time and it works llike a charm.

Hope this helps.

The DKC100XG is the model of the control box only, not the piano. I am
assuming that this is a playback-only model and does not record. If this is
the case, it may only play ESEQ files (Yamaha proprietary format)or MIDI
format 0 files. Also, it might be that your Disklavier can only use double
density disks, and not the more common high density diskettes. In any case,
you can still play anything you find on the internet - it's just a matter of
how many hoops you jump through first! The playback only models do not have
an advanced owner's manual.

There are free convert programs that convert MIDI format 1 files to MIDI
format 0 files. One can be found on the Pianodisc web page. Most of the
MIDI files on the internet are in MIDI 1 format.

For $59 there are the Giebler utilities (which I think are a must for any DK
user!) at www.giebler.com. These programs allow you to format both double
density and high density diskettes for your Disklavier, as well as convert
MIDI files to ESEQ files. These are also DOS programs.

Also, Jack's post is great should you be able to find the utility programs
he mentions. I must admit it took me months to find them!

Good Morning, Everyone,

According to my information, this is a playback-only model which reads both
DD and HD disks as well as E-SEQ and Type 0 and 1 SMFs.

I would look into the following issues:

--Is the disk properly formatted? For example, a Windows computer is pretty
stupid regarding the formatting of DD and HD disks. You have to tell the
computer which is the proper format to use. A DD disk formatted as HD will
confuse the Disklavier.
--Do the MIDI files have the ".mid" extension?
--Have you mixed E-SEQ and SMFs on the same disk?

I think that an earlier post mentioned that someone downloaded a zip file
which included Disklavier directory files as well as E-SEQ files. You might
try copying just the E-SEQ files without the directory file.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
