Can anyone explain Velocet to me? I've downloaded it but don't have a clue how to include it in my flow. I generally play midi files to my Disklavier straight from my laptop. And frequently the volume is completely misset. It would be great to convert volumes (based on curves) which is what it looks like Velocet does.... Or should I look at another product? Can I do this with Midigraphy? Richard Stibbons wrote:

Harry, I have found Veloset to be a good tool to adjust max volumes for MIDI, ESEQ, and some other file types as contained on the file type pick list within the program. Veloset is a macro tool that appears to allow setting all of the volume controllers at once, by manipulating the sliders on either side. (Caution: saving the new settings overwrites the original file.) If you want to change individual channels, you will be better off using a sequencer such as Cakewalk; there may also be some freeware that will do it. If you're thinking about trying to integrate veloset functions into an automated flow from laptop to piano, you probably will have get access to the source code. I would thinnk some of the more sophisticated PC-based MIDI players out there would incorpporate similar functionality. Do we have a Veloset expert in the group? I have found that a significant number of files are rejected by Veloset complaining that an "unrecognized statement in MIDI file" has been found. Is there a way around this?

I've never tried Veloset, but I believe I know what it is. Assuming that all the files that didn't work did not come from a single faulty source, my suggestion is to invest in a proven sequencer that would give you the capability of examining and modifying MIDI files and not waste your time. Power Tracks by PG Music is quite capable and inexpensive ($29). See www.pgmusic.com Cakewalk costs more, but would also do the job nicely. Good luck! bnbwv@... wrote: > > Do we have a Veloset expert in the group? I am certainly not a Veloset expert, but I have used Veloset to adjust the volume of many midi files downloaded from the internet. I have never had Veloset reject a .fil or .mid file nor have I ever seen the message that you have reported. perhaps I have just been fortunate in the files that I have operated on with Veloset, but I would think that in the hundred or more files that I have brought into Veloset that I might have encountered the problem that you report. What happens when you import the midi file into Cakewalk? Do you get a similar message? If so, perhaps the midi file has been corrupted somehow in the download to your computer. Tom

Thanks for the reply. I think I have solved the problem. I am
trying to massage a few files to play on a PianoDisk system on a
Samick grand at a local assisted living home. It requires SMF0
files, and to keep the volume compatible with a background
application, I wanted to reduce the dynamic range of velocities as I
have been doing at home for my Disklavier. I got a program called
MidiType off the internet free, written by one Jeff Glatt, which
converts files from one format to another. However, although the
files seem to play properly both on the piano and on the Windows
multimedia player, apparently it does something to the files to be
incompatible with Velocet. The solution seems to be to adjust the
velocities before converting the file type with MidiType.
I might mention in passing that I recently bought a copy of
Cakewalk Home Studio 9, which I had hoped would be a significant step
up from my old TRAX and Midisoft Sessions programs that I have been
making do with for years. At this point, however, I have been unable
to get the Cakewalk program to do velocity adjustments and file
conversions anywhere near as conveniently as the old programs, and am
extremely unimpressed with it. I emailed Cakewalk for instructions
thinking that I had missed something, but the first response did not
help and a second request has gone unanswered. I would not recommend
it to anyone for these types of operations.

I'm glad you solved the problem and that the assisted living folks can now enjoy their music at background levels. However, one man's mate is another man's person! While I've never used Veloset, I wouldn't want anyone to think badly of Cakewalk--Pro Audio 9, at least. Adjusting note velocities is not only a cinch, there are a number of ways to do it: Select the track(s) to be edited. 1) Pull down Edit/Scale Velocities. You may either scale the selected notes by a percentage, or set them to fixed values. You may also make linear crescendos and decrescendos by merely filling out the dialog box and clicking. And, if you don't like the result, you can Edit/Undo. OR 2) Pull down Edit/MIDI Effects/Cakewalk FX/Velocity and fill out the dialog box. OR 3) If you need to make more sophisticated changes, you can always write and run a CAL script that will change any given velocity value to another. As an example of Cakewalk's versatility, suppose you wanted to change the velocity value of all notes less than 25 to 25. Select the track(s), pull down Edit/Select/By Filter. In the dialog box, click "None", check "Note", in "Max" type 24, click "OK". Now go to Edit/Scale Velocities, type 25 in both boxes, click "OK" and it's done. Now, if someone would just write a Cakewalk plug-in that would display a histogram of the note velocity distribution in a MIDI file or selection, I could be a happy person's mate. ----------------------------------- bnbwv@... wrote: > > Thanks for the reply. As I noted, I bought the less pricey Home Studio 9 program, which apparently does not support comprehensive modification of MIDI files. I cannot justify the cost of the Pro version of Cakewalk, and felt that I was paying a little too much for the Home Studio for the few things that I wanted to do. I will check out the PGMusic program and maybe try it. I bought their 1000+ classical collection and, other than having to modify the velocities for 1000 files to be compatible with my old Disklavier, have been pleased with their product. Incidentally, Velocet does display a velocity histogram, so you might at least use it to observe the velocity distribution, even if you don't use it to modify the velocities. --- In disklavier@y..., "Robert E.
