New Firmware version 4

New Firmware version 4

2010-03-09 by Phil Blah

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has updated their Disklavier Mark4 with the new firmware, version 4?

Yamaha have not updated their website or FTP but if you go to Network Update in the internet section it has it there!

I don't have broadband currently, so can't really download the update.

If anyone has updated, I would be interested to see if there is anything exciting...

Cheers,

Philip

Great spot, Phil.

I downloaded the firmware via the PRC menu - Network update. Took about 5 mins to download with a 8Mb broadband connection.

It then asks you if you want to reboot now or later. I selected Reboot now.

After this, the PRC would not reconnect. So I had to manually push the power button on the piano to take it out of standby.

When the PRC reconnected, it said that I should update the PRC Interface from v3.0 to v4.0 - it did not do this automatically.

To do this I had to go into the main PRC-100 menu (using the icon in the bottom left of the screen) and select 'Interface Updater'

After a brief message saying it is 'Searching for update file...' there were the following 3 updates possible:

Application Current Version Next Version
Interface 3.0.0 4.0.0
PRC-100 Menu 1.1.0 1.1.1
Service Center 1.1.0 1.1.1

I selected all of them, and then pressed 'Install'

A message saying 'Downloading...' appeared on the PRC for about 30 seconds and then 'Updating...' for about 1-2 minutes.

A message then appeared saying 'Interface program updated successfully' - tapped OK

Exiting the Interface updater automatically caused the PRC 100 to reboot - another couple of minutes.

And now for the drum-roll... hardly anything has changed. It could be my imagination, but the PRC seems a little more responsive between screen changes. The tone on touching the screen sounds a little nicer. No new main menu options. I think there is an addition Network screen under Settings and a screen for Shortcuts which I don't vividly recall.

Sorry to disappoint. I can only posit that the v4.0.0 enhancements are very subtle, or not yet implemented.

Hope that someone else can prove me wrong.

Mark

Yep, I couldn't find much at all. (And it still works with DKVBrowser if anyone cares).

The shortcuts that Mark found were the only thing I could find. If anyone is interested, the only way I found to "invoke" the shortcuts was to assign that one hot button on the PRC remote's charging base to a shortcut. Without documentation, it's hard to know if you can also invoke them via the keyboard or something while in standby.

There was a lot of talk about a new "open" API. I can detect none of that. Maybe there's more to it that we can't see.

Re: New Firmware version 4

Thanks guys for the notification. It installed, my Mark IV did go thru the reboot, then turned off. I hit the button to start again, following Phil's instructions I was able to update to 4.0 flawlessly.

I have also downloaded the 'disklavier controller' from iTunes and am successfully controlling the piano from my iPHONE. The interface on the iPhone looks pretty nice and useable.

Yippee! Nice.

Kevin, I do care and it is working with 1.8 of DKVBrowser perfectly as well.

So as it stands in my household, we have the ability to control via DKVBrowser on 2 destop Mac's, one Mac laptop, and 4 iphones. Not to mention the tablet and real PRC and 3 virtual PRC's. Let the battles begin to controlling the piano around here!

Thanks so much guys for letting us know 4.0 system software update available.

I haven't downloaded V4.0 yet, but there is supposed to be a "remote lesson" function which allows you to connect multiple Mark IVs via the internet, allowing one player to play someone else's piano or to play a duet over the net. Try looking at the applications icon in the bottom left of the PRC display.

I just looked at the PRC and do not see what you are describing under applications. There is access to Opera Browser which I never noticed before.

Most of the stuff to get to on the PRC is such tiny print that I can't read it or the backlighting is so dim that I really can't see it as well as the fact the battery never seems to be charged or doesn't last long.

If I have time to explore more and find anything will let you know. There were some games on one menu that I never noticed.

In a video on Yamaha's NAMM site (yamaha.com/namm) The video stated the feature is going to be available to Universities initially. They may release the feature to the public in the future.

Hi everyone, I've been following the Ver 4 updates and can't seem to find how to download them. I called my piano tuner guy and he hasn't heard anything about the update. Would someone be able to direct me to where I can find instructions or download this update?

Thanks!

If you have version 3.0, you can go to the internet options on the remote and do it from there.

Re: New Firmware version 4

2010-04-08 by Roberto Fasciani

Hi everyone,
I just upgraded my DC3 Mark IV Pro to 4.0.
As Julien stated, it setted by itself yhe OMNI Out from "output" "output + Piano TS" making piano parts (ch. 1 and 2) playing digital on speakers the note played by the piano itself. There is only the need to change this setting. Not a big problem.
But I may not use this 4.0 with IPhone Disklavier application because strangely it seems to rely on another wireless controller than the Disklavier itself.
I'm very surprised.
My DKV is connected to Internet and my home network via cable so, if I am right, I may not use the iPhone.
But this is very strange: why not to connect iPhone to the DKV wireless network as the PRC Remote Controller do?
I may even get Internet connection from DKV through its WIFI on my iPhone!
I cannot understand the reason for this workaround.
Am I wrong?
Someone using my network configuration (cable connection from DKV to network) managed to use Disklavier Controller on iPhone?
Thanks in advance.
Roberto ;

Hey Roberto,

I understand what you are saying with the wireless on the piano. This topic has come up a few times now, the main issue is the piano's wireless was not intended to be anything more than a way to communicate to the PRC controller. Remember this was released in 2004 and obviously designed a few years before this. I think the whole iphone app was something that Yamaha just 'threw together' to show off the MK4 piano in the 2010 piano show they do. It's something of a 'cool factor' for 'sales/marketing' but nothing really serious.

As the actual piano is running off linux and it would not be all that hard to try a bit harder and do more with the wireless card they have, but it's actually pretty weak performance spec, signal wise.

Most people these days would just plug in a wireless access point from the ethernet port or they would use the ethernet port and their 'main network' would have an access point connected. This way performance is great and everyone can see the piano properly. So you can run around the house with your iphone you won't have a problem with signal. In short the built in wireless is so crappy I bet most people using using the PRC, would struggle to go to the next room! (like me lol).

But yes, I do agree, the wireless could be more useful ie allowing the iphone to connect at least.

Version 4.0 update was pretty disappointing, the whole thing was only 24ish meg so I suppose we can't expect much. They really should of had it as version 3.5 or something and saved the major version update for something actually useful. oh well. But they mean well and it's a good start to know that you can now get updates easily from the internet with everything integrated (rather than downloading a bloated .iso file and burning to cd and making a install floppy disk and having it do a whole system install etc).

Philip

Hi Roberto,

Ok, I understand your problem.

You cannot connect your iphone to the wireless of the piano itsef (that you use for PRC and DKVBrowser). It wil not work. Iphone shall be connected to the network of the internet connection of your piano (totally different from the wireless installed in the piano for DKVbrowser and PRC)
So you shall use a small wireless box connected to your internet network then you connect iphone to this wireless box and it will work perfectly

With some good sun from Durrazo !
Julien
