Acoustic Recording

2010-06-14 by kimewallin1031

I am trying to get a handle on whether or not I can use my disklavier to do an actual record of the acoustic piano (using microphones inside piano, maybe?) and what will be the sound quality OR do I need to employ a sound studio to record my music? I have tried recording music digitally and too much is lost from the acoustic sound my music requires. Any and all suggestions are appreciated and welcome. THank you in advance for your help

Recording piano music is an art. Unless you are very experienced, a studio
recording will be the best. Usually reverb is added to the recording and
included in the digital audio recording. To do this yourself, you need:
1) microphones. probably cost between $100 and $600 a piece set up in an XY
pattern about 6 feet from the piano.

2) an audio to digital converter box and software. MBox2 using Pro Tools LE
is a good one and costs $500 (in addition to the microphones).

3) a fast computer to edit the audio. I use an iMac with Logic Pro 8
studio, or the Pro Tools. You need at least 2-4gig of memory and use an
external hard drive to record the music. You don't want the music on your
system's hard drive if possible.

OR buy a digital recorder like the handeld Sony ($500) that creates a
digital audio file and comes with software - for PC only. However, the pcm
file that is generated can be edited on an iMac using proper software, i.e.
Logic Pro.

So far my favorite way to record my father's piano playing is to use the
Disklavier to create the MIDI files. I take the MIDI files into Logic Pro
to edit them. Then I run them through a virtual piano (software) to create
a digital audio file that I can burn to a CD. I use Akoustic Piano from
Native Instruments for my virtual piano.

Basically, you get what you pay for.
