Getting my Yamaha Floppy disk library onto the DKC-850

Getting my Yamaha Floppy disk library onto the DKC-850

2010-07-14 by dsmith941

I imagine this has already been asked and answered, but 30 minutes of searching the archives just confused me. So, I have just upgraded my Mark III to DKC-850. Is there any easy way to get my many Floppy disks from Yamaha onto this new system? Is a usb floppy drive the only way. But as I recall, you cant read a yamaha disk anyway. The DKC-850 manual does not even recognize that this might be desired?!!!!

So, can someone please re-reply with suggestions, as this is probably a question lots of people will have in the next few weeks, as the DKC-850 boxes are installed in the USA>

Thanks again for your help..... Dave

You have several options.
1) load the floppys into the flash memory of the DKC-850
2) use RootARipper (software utility found at www.carolrpt.com) and copy
each floppy to a hard drive on your computer. Each floppy could have it's
own folder. Then use a disk burning software program and burn these folders
to data CD.
3) or copy these folders to a USB thumb drive

THE DKC-850 will read MIDI files or ESEQ or .FIL files copied to the root
directory or one level down (folder). Make sure nothing else is on the CD
or the thumb drive.

Depending upon how much music you have, and the flash drive is only 4 M(?),
you could organize your music into folders then burn them to CD or USB thumb
drive. You could have a CD for jazz, another for Mozart, another for
showtunes, etc.

Good morning, everyone.

If you get your old recordings onto your computer, you can transfer them over your local area network to the DKC-850. The DKC-850 has an ethernet port than enables it to join your local network.

Carol, I have been using the usb thumb drive to transfer floppies using RootARipper. It always reorders the song into alphabetical order, which is maddening. Is there a work around to keep them into the original disk order?

Re: [disklavier] Re: Getting my Yamaha Floppy disk library onto the DKC-850

2010-07-30 by Carol Beigel

I copied each floppy into a folder named the serial number of the disk, i.e.
501234, etc. on my ard drive. I thought the piano files were named
something like Piano01, Piano02, etc. in each folder. Then again, I used
the DVK utility to do this in the first place along with Geibler. Are we
talking alphabetical order of each disk or the entire project?

Re: Getting my Yamaha Floppy disk library onto the DKC-850

I think I finally got the method. After RipARooter, I delete the pianodir.fil file. Then sometimes the song files have no suffix, eg, no .fil. So I add it and add a prefix to order the songs 001 song1.fil, etc..Then onto the thumb drive in folders. Lots of busy work but I guess only hve to do it once. Thanks. Dave

Hi

The order of the songs are stored in the pianodir.fil file. Delete that file and you will loose the info that is displayed, ie Disk name artist and each song title.

But yes you will be able to rename the files into any order you like.

Re: Getting my Yamaha Floppy disk library onto the DKC-850

2010-08-03 by david962548

Hi

It always reorders the song into alphabetical order, which
is maddening. Is there a work around to keep them into the original disk order?

Make sure you keep the pianodir file this stores the order.

If open it as a text file you will see the song titles.

You will need to play the pianodir file to play in the correct order.

OR

Open the pianodir file in notepad and rename the file in the folder so they are in the correct order.

01 - xxxxxx
02 - aaaaa
03 - vvvvv
etc

There is also a program in the library called EEXPLORE which opens the directory files and lets you reorder the songs by using the mouse to move songs up or down in the DIR file.

Good afternoon, everyone.

In the case of floppy disks, the Disklavier will display the song files in the order in which you copy them to the disk.

PianoBench

So I add it and add a prefix to order the songs 001 song1.fil, etc..Then onto the thumb drive in folders. Lots of busy work but I guess only hve to do it once. Thanks. Dave
