setting up wireless network

2010-07-17 by inglesbyj

Can anyone assist in setting up a wireless network. I purchased a new DC2M4 and the technician who installed did not really know how. He had me purchase a wireless G USB adaptor to communicate with my router and set up the USB on my primary PC where the router connect to. I don't see how that makes sense and it certainly doesn't work to plug the USB adaptor into the disklavier. I'm afraid I have the wrong hardware. Thanks!

I use a Mac with my Disklavier Mark IV with a Airport Extreme Main Base hooked to my router which is hooked to my Mac via ethernet cable. This is the same base station that allows me to have wifi to other computers and devices in my home. I have an airport express station that I plug into an outlet near my Mark IV which is a different area of my home and is connected to the Mark IV via an ethernet cable. The Airport express device allows me to communicate via wifi between the Mark IV located upstairs and my computer located downstairs.

Not sure what type of wireless ethernet station, PC users are using with their setup.

In one of this forums discussions, Jack Brennan says:

For another option, you could use the TRENDnet TEW-647GA
gaming adapter. I have two of these in my house, one for
my TV and one for my Disklavier, both of which use wired
Ethernet only. The one on the Disklavier is tucked right
up under the piano; it's small enough to fit and after
initial setup, you never have to touch it again. Once in
a blue moon, the adapter will "wedge" and stop carrying
traffic, but you just power cycle the adapter and you're
back up in two minutes.

Here is a link in this forum, where some PC users are discussing the suggested Buffalo wifi routers that Yamaha recommended and what they found and what they used.

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/disklavier/message/6073

Also, if you need the documentations for your Mark IV, here are some links to access the manuals, and paperwork that is available on the Yamaha site and some I put online.

If you are missing some of the older Mark IV manuals and handouts that were supplied by Yamaha, I have posted some of these at:

http://homepage.mac.com/jheitzeb/FileSharing20.html

For those looking for the original manual, quick manual and tablet user guide for their Mark IV Disklaviers, these are available on the
Yamaha site at the following address:

http://www.yamaha.co.jp/manual/english/result.php?div_code=piano
Just type 'Mark IV' in the search field and you will be taken to a page that has the manuals for the Mark IV disklavier.

Hope this helps you,
Joan

You need a "wireless bridge" which is a device that connects the ethernet jack on your piano module to your wireless network or access point.

Piano--------Wireless Bridge/Gaming Video Adapter((((((((((Airwaves)))))))))))Wireless RouterAccess Point/Wireless Network(((((((((((Airwaves))))))))))USB Computer Adapter---------Internet Modem

Think of a Wireless Bridge as 1 port on your router
Think of the Access Point as a router switch where multiple wireless devices can tap into your network

Sounds like he was just setting up your wireless local area network
Now you just need a bridge to tap into it. To set it up you need to know the password of your secure wireless network and configure the wireless bridge by connecting it to your computer to enter the settings before it will work.

Good Luck,

Works great on my E3

I use a Cisco-Linksys Dual-Band Wireless-N Gaming and Video Adapter. I bought new for $79.99 on Amazon.

Hi

Glad it works for you ok. I am trying to set up a friends Tyros using just a ethernet lead straight from the Tyros to the router. At first it would not obtain an IP address on DHCP so I had to set up an IP address. Now it connects to the router but NOT to Yamaha's web site.

Any ideas anyone?

Dave

Re: [disklavier] setting up wireless network

2010-08-12 by Brij Agarwal

Jim,

It's not completely clear what configuration the tech left you with, but perhaps it is because the configuration sounds so bizarre. From what you're saying it sounds like your wireless router is connected by Ethernet cable to your PC (which is very normal). And it also sounds like the tech tried to use a wireless connection of some sort using a USB connected to your PC that apparently would communicate with the piano and then (through the PC) with the wireless router.

First, I think you realize that what you need for an Internet connection to the piano is something connected to the Ethernet port on the piano. While your DC2M4 has an 802.11/b wireless network of its own from the factory, it is used to wirelessly connect the small PRC-100 with the piano. In the simplest scenario, you could simply disconnect all of the crap the tech had you buy (assuming your wireless router is still working), and run a long Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port on your piano and one of the Ethernet ports on your wireless router. That would work fine and allow you to connect to the Internet through your wireless router, except that it would not be "wireless" because of the Ethernet cable between the piano and the wireless router. To eliminate that Ethernet cable, you can buy a "game adapter" which has an Ethernet input and which has a wireless 802.11 "output" that will connect up with your wireless router. I used a
Linksys WRT54G game adapter, which cost me about $90. In looking for a link for you, it seems that that product may have been eliminated. If you need some help, let me know and I'll try to find an alternate. In any event, you need a wireless transmitter on your piano (in addition to the 802.11 wireless transmitter that is used to connect your PRC-100 to the piano) to connect with the Internet. You will end up with two wireless networks emanating from your piano, which I think is pretty cool.

By the way, all is not lost with the wireless USB adapter the clueless tech had you buy. You can use it (if needed) to have your PC wirelessly connect with your wireless router, rather than having an Ethernet cable running between your wireless router and your PC (which is the configuration I believe your are describing).

When I first had my DC3M4, I had lots of issues, so I think I know how it's done. My own issues stemmed from using a Linksys "wireless bridge" that the dealer loaned to me since he couldn't get it to work and which I eventually concluded simply did not work (I think it was effed from the get-go). The tipoff to me should have been that it came with a device driver CD that was included with the "bridge", which I obviously couldn't install on my Disklavier. After talking with Yamaha customer service, they overnighted to me a working game adapter which worked instantly (and a copy of which I immediatly purchased). In any event, get yourself some kind of a game adapter, and let me know if you need some more help.
