DU1E3 does it play like a U1 without the disklavier internals?

DU1E3 does it play like a U1 without the disklavier internals?

2011-08-20 by rabbbbiiitttt

Hi, I was about to order my new DU1E3 when I was told that due to the disklavier it was harder to play than the normal U1....

I was under the impression that the playability was identical....

Help as I just delayed my purchase fearing I would get something I did not enjoy,....

Thanks... JJ.

The solenoids do not interfere with the normal action on my DC3A. I've played both a C3 and DC3A and the action was the same. Not sure why a U1 would be any different as the solenoids hit the back of the keys to lift them. SJ

They are much harder to play when the in quiet mode, but otherwise no different.

They are different to play, but only slightly. I wouldn't say it was harder though - my MPX1Z (U1 MarkIIXG with silent system) feels slightly lighter to the touch when in silent mode and is more frustrating to play due to sounding delays on high velocity notes.

The DU1E3 will play the same as a U1 acoustic piano. The solenoids sit under the keys and are "out of the way." The sensing system is fiber optic and does not come in physical contact with the action of the piano.

Playing in Silent mode does affect the touch of the piano. However, there is no Silent mode on the DU1E3.

I've just been told by the seller that ---?
Just to confirm: There is a “silent” system on the DU1E3 allowing you to play through headphones using a digital sample and the principle’s repeated across the range! You can also record what you’ve played.

There is a Silent mode on the DU1A in Europe.

Good point. I was thinking about North America. Sorry about that!

In the United States and Canada the DU1E3 does not have Silent mode. (The prior model, DU1A did have the Silent mode in the U.S. and Canada.)

The Disklavier E3 series comes in 3 different versions, depending on where in the World you are. The version available in the US and Canada does NOT have the silent function. The version available in Europe, among other places, has a "Quiet" function, which mutes the strings and feeds the sampled piano sound to the speaker outputs and a "Silent" function, which feeds the sampled piano sound to the headphone outputs.

If the piano in question is a newish U1 Disklavier, it will be either a DU1A which is a Disklavier MarkIII and which does have the Silent function, or a DU1AE3 which, if it does have the Silent function, is likely to be a grey import.
