no damper pedal when recording?

no damper pedal when recording?

2011-10-13 by jonarnold228

I just got a Yamaha 4'11" grand with a super Disklavier on it which I am loving. But after recording a piece on it and playing it back, the damper pedal is not being recognized?!? I can see the damper pedal going up and down *a bit* when it plays back but for all intents and purposes, it's as if I had played WITHOUT the damper pedal at all, which was not the case.

Is there something I am missing? I asked the person I bought it from and he said he was not familiar with this problem and suggested I format a new disk and try it again, which I did with the same results?

Thanks,
Jon

What model Disklavier do you have? Is there "lost motion" (start pressing the pedal and the dampers don't start to move)? Are there "pass" numbers when the Maintenance mode is done on the pedal? When was the last time a Disklavier tech went over the piano? Just the questions the tech will ask you.

Often during delivery - a rod from the pedal going to the damper assembly get disconnected - you may want to have the store that you purchased the piano from come out and check that rod. Most delivery crews are told to check that before leaving the home - but they might have forgotten in this case. It is a very easy fix - but your pedals will not work until that rod gets put in it's proper place.

Hope that helps

Alan

Alan, thanks for that, but when I play it myself (ie, manually) without the Disklavier, the damper works fine. Well, sorta fine, I need to get used to it compared to the spinet piano I had for many years, as I have heard that there are various “levels” to the damper depending on how far you press it, and I am only attuned to “either pressed or not pressed” with no in-between.

Carol, it appears (crawling under the piano with a flashlight) that the model is DGA1. I bought the piano less than a month ago, so can’t say whe the last time a tech saw or tuned it. The guy I bought it from came over one evening after it had been delivered a demonstrated it, and the damper seemed to work fine, so I wasn’t sure if it was simply “user error” on my part or a problem that needs a tech to fix.

Hi Jon,

There is one of two possibilities :

- Pedals need to be calibrated by a Disklavier technician

- Pedals need to be mechanically adjusted then calibrated by a Disklavier technician
