Cynthia Sawtooth Animator

2007-12-30 by Cynthia

Howdy!

I just added a picture of our Sawtooth
Animator to the Miscellaneous Album
in this Group's Photos section. It's the
same electronics package as the new
Dotcom however it is shown with an
Motm front panel and knobs. (All we
do is mount the Dotcom Panel and
knobs along with a power connector
adapter to this same assembly shown
and viola... instant Dotcom format!)
So you can see how close we are to
actually shipping...

With all of the sampling that goes on
I must admit that I'm a bit shy about
posting lots and lots of sound samples
and will start offering a few more in the
future.

Aside from the obvious use as a sound
fattener for when you want your system
to sound ten feet taller, here's a less
obvious use for these Animators.

They have an internal frequency-to-
voltage converter that continuously
watches the frequency or pitch of the
INPUT Signal and this adjusts the speed
of the six internal LFOs accordingly so
that there is no lone "sweet spot" on the
keyboard (as there was in the original
ElectroNotes design years ago) and
instead ours has a continuous sweet
spot that is the full range or length of
the entire keyboard.

I love to make a weird feedback loop
by feeding a VCO into the Animator,
and then using one of the six LFO
Outputs to modulate the same VCO
feeding it. This can gyrate into some
wild sounds, the very best of which is
when you pull the LFO patchcord out
thus breaking the feedback loop and
listen to the oscillator totally loose it's
mind and the whole patch goes through
dramatic death throws ever lowering and
lowering frequency until it is back to
normal. It is a wild effect and I've
thought a great dramatic way to end a
live show. It would be a gas to try this
with a whole rak full of Oscillators and
Animators.

I see the Sawtooth Animators as
especially desirable for Synthesizer.com
users in particular as there aren't really
any dedicated LFOs available in these
systems, and any complexity of modulation
is at the expense of loosing a VCO for
sound creation, so instead of buying six
more Oscillators you can just buy one
Sawtooth Animator. No matter how
frugal, I think anyone can see the savings
implied!

Best Wishes, and thank you all for your
comments and suggestions today!

Best Wishes for a Happy New Year!
