HELP - Module BETA testers needed

HELP - Module BETA testers needed

2010-06-23 by Doug

Hi Folks,

I don't know a better way of asking for your help. DOTCOM folks please take notice.

I'm developing a line of DOTCOM modules that augment, rather than compete with, Roger's already impressive line of modules. I want to play peacefully in the arena and am open to guidance & suggestions.

FYI - My current modules are: (many more on the way, BTW)

1U Analog Delay/Echo Voltage controlled delay (PT2399 based - no noise reduction compander)
2U Triple Parametric Filter (Freq, Res, Cut/Boost for each)
2U Steiner Filter
1U Quad VCA - 4 linear VCAs in a single width panel

I'd like one or two WELL QUALIFIED folks to test my prototypes and provide timely feedback. If you are willing to do this, please conact me. I'm all ears.

Regards,

Doug

I'd love to help out, but what is your idea of "WELL QUALIFIED"?

Hey Doug,

This is awesome news! Very exciting. The Moog format can definitely use more manufacturers. There are some glaring holes in the line-up... I'd love to get my hands on a really dirty analog delay in MU...

You will definitely get a bigger response on Muff Wiggler's Forum:

http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/

There are tons of very knowledgeable people there, and many module manufacturers post there regularly. If you're not a member, you should really join up.

Hi,

Good question.

Hmmm. WELL QUALIFIED.. I guess that means that you need to promise to test
my modules and report what you see and hear honestly, within a reasonable
time (say 2 weeks).

Also tell me why you are sincere about this, since I'm trusting you with a
considerable effort and expense.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

I would be glad to beta test your modules. This is an exciting endeavor of which I would like to be a part. Roger's module line up is great, but as others have said, there is room for greater variety beyond the "classic" modules. That is why I went with Modcan/Cynthia for my 2nd modular.

As for my qualifications:
I have been programming and playing synthesizers for 30 years, own a 88-space Synth.com, and have participated in the Synthesizers.com forum since its beginning.

I look forward to joining you in your efforts,
David W. Skinner

I don't know how qualified I am, but I've been playing and or servicing musical equipment since 1976. But I'm not a guru of patchcords like some others around here. 'Though I'd like to try out the modules, I don't know if I could actually put them through enough of a wringer to find the hidden troubles.

First, I want to sincerely thank everyone who replied offering assistance and well-wishes. It's really encouraging to me, particularly in that I'm going into some rather expensive cash outlays for tooling and NREs. I could only guess at the numbers of modules I could sell to recoup costs, and your words are most encouraging.

Second, I seem to frequently misplace my brain and this is one of those minor cases. I had forgotten about chickens and eggs. How would I send out a beta module to most of those willing to help, if it didn't yet have a panel - panels are the most expensive parts of modules and I wouldn't consider getting them made until I had beta feedback. For a few rare folks like STG, sending out a board with wires and jacks hanging off is not an issue, but for most it would be a nightmare. So I'm kinda caught. I'm trying to figure out the best approach to solving this quickly, so please bear with me.

Third, in selecting my testers, I'll plead the Fifth regarding whom and how I'll select. PLEASE don't feel slighted if you're not one of the testers. Its not reflection on your capabilities, musical resume or anything else.

Fourth, I'm continually updating my website and module offerings in little bits, so please check back frequently. I'll post here if anythin major changes. Its time consuming and takes me away from working on the next "latest & greatest", but I think the balance for me is a good one.

Thanks again Everyone!!!

Re: [dotcomformat] Re: HELP - Module BETA testers needed

2010-06-28 by Kenny Roll

Doug, I would think that a beta tester wouldn't really need elaborate screen printing on a panel to just test a module. You could always drill the holes in a panel to accommodate the knobs, jacks, and switches, place them in the holes in the proper orientation, and let the tester realize where '1' and '10' are on the knobs, etc. (As long as the switches weren't upside down!) After all, beta testing could very well find some things that needed to be changed regarding the positioning and labeling of the panels, in which case you would be stuck with panels that served no purpose. In 'alpha testing', sure, the labeling would probably be nailed down by then, but in 'beta testing', I wouldn't see what would be wrong with just drilling the holes and having the labeling 'understood'. It could prevent problems later on with some modules, although I don't know how there would be any such issues with the Polymoog Filter.

On the yellow text, if it serves your purpose and helps the user better determine the functionality of the module, any aesthetic consideration to the contrary should be negligible. I wouldn't mind some yellow text on a module in my rig if it meant an easier understanding of a module's functionality.

Both are merely opinions of but one person, however, and should be taken as such.

Hi Doug, Possibly a bit late but would be more than willing to help out testing if anyone is still needed.

I was thinking would it be possible to make mock-ups of the panels out of ply-wood or even stiff card perhaps even small cheap plastic sandwich boxes??

To all who responded or sent PM....

Thanks SO much for your interest. The enthusiasm really helps me validate my efforts and upfront costs. It's great to get this kind of positive feedback.

So many of you have offered to test and be part of this, that its made my selections difficult, as you might imagine.

I don't want anyone to feel slighted for not getting something to test. I've been in contact with a few folks for the first few modules, but I have plans for other modules and will try to spread out the testing as much as possible.

Again, thanks. My web site www.steamsynth.com is showing some preliminary info (subject to change without notice, your milage may vary, etc.). Also note that I will NEVER offer "vapor-ware". I will only make available product that I currently have on the shelf (or very close to it - as in a couple days). PROMISE!

I'm always open to critique and have fairly thick skin. Bring it on!

Regards,

Doug
