MOTM Module

MOTM Module

2011-04-26 by Welton Barker

I am going to install a MOTM module into my Synthesizers.com cabinet and power harness. I have the dotcom QMPSA power adapter, but I'm not clear how this works going from dotcom power to MOTM module. All the examples I've been able to find talk about MOTM PS to dotcom module.

Making the assumption that I am an idiot, which shouldn't be too big a stretch for anyone, can someone tell me step-by-step the simplest way to go from the 4 pin OUTPUT (male) on MOTM to the 6 pin INPUT (female) on the dotcom harness?

Ai-yi-yi. That is so incredibly obvious that I'm even more embarassed than I was before. Yes, thank you, that is exactly what I needed. I have no explanation except that I was possibly not seeing the forest for the trees. I'm just not very experienced with this stuff, and I'm terrified of making a simple mistake, which leads me to making even simpler mistakes.

Thank you again for your patience and your explanation!

If I am reading this correctly, you want to power an MOTM format module with the DotCom power supply and harness. If that's correct, here's the step-by-step:

1 - Remove the short, 2" cable (6-pin connectors, 4-wires) from the QMPSA board.

2 - Remove the jumper from the two-pin JMP2 header next to the 6-pin male connector on the board.
(Save both the jumper and 2" cable, you may want them again someday.)

3 - Plug the 6-pin female connector from your DotCom power supply harness (QDH20, QDH40 or QPS2 that would normally go to a DotCom module) onto the 6-pin male (.100" MTA) connector on the QMPSA board.

4 - Plug the MOTM 4-wire power cable onto the the 4-pin male (.156" MTA) connector on the QMPSA board.

5 - Plug the other end of the MOTM 4-wire power cable onto your MOTM format module.

WARNING: Unlike the DotCom power connectors, the MOTM connectors and cables are not keyed and it is therefore possible to hook the power up backwards to your MOTM format module. Just pay close attention to what you are doing and you will be OK.

I think it would be a good idea for you to look at the QMPSA PCB Layout/Schematc available on the the DotCom power components page.

Hope this helps,

James

Just FYI for future, check out this thread I created on Muff's forum where I
made some power adapter cables to run DotCom modules off of my MOTM distro
boards.
http://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16488

Since my DIY/MOTM power supplies have +-15 and +5 volts, I had no need for
the QMPSA power adapter and if you are going to run a few MOTM modules off
of a DotCom supply, you never really need the QMPSA power adapter, it's just
convenient.

So, to run a MOTM module off of a DotCom supply, all you have to do is cut
or pull off the MTA 0.100 DotCom connector and replace it with the correct
$0.50 MTA 0.156 MOTM connector. (note: trying to reuse a MTA 0.156 connector
off of the power cable that came with your MOTM module probably won't work
because Synth Tech uses 18 gauge wire and connectors to match. You need to
get MTA 0.156 connectors for the smaller 24 gauge wire using in the DotCom
power harness)

Sure, you need to make sure you wire it correctly and inserting the wire is
easier if you get the $20 tool (instead of using a small screw driver) but
if you are going to run two or three MOTM modules in your DotCom system it
is cost effective over getting QMPSA's.

Best of luck!
John L Rice

PS - Synth Tech MOTM modules that have very shallow circuit boards and
should be no problem in the shallowest of DotCom cases:
MOTM-310 VCO
MOTM-380 quad LFO
MOTM-800 EG

Do you know the Mouser (or Digikey) part number for it (the tool)? I'm
starting to get tired of using a screwdriver.

Thanks
